White Ops Threat Intelligence researchers have discovered 104 apps infected with the Soraka virus: here's what you risk and how to defend yourself
Hackers never rest, not even during the holiday season. The cybersecurity experts at White Ops Threat Intelligence have discovered a new Android virus that has affected 104 apps on the Google Play Store and is very dangerous for users' smartphones. Soraka, the name of the malware, is an adware, a virus that continuously displays advertisements on the mobile screen and allows hackers to earn tens and tens of thousands of euros.
Adware is nothing new: in the past few months we have repeatedly told you about malicious applications discovered in Google's online store. As you are well aware, adware is not a virus that is dangerous for user data, but it only aims at showing misleading advertisements. Moreover, they slow down the performance of the smartphone, making opening applications and messages a real nightmare. The 104 applications discovered by cybersecurity experts have been downloaded by more than 4.6 million users worldwide, most likely in Italy as well.
How the Soraka virus works
Even at Christmas time, it's time to delete dangerous applications from your Android smartphone. The alarm has been raised by cybersecurity experts from White Ops Threat Intelligence, who have discovered a new type of virus in 104 applications on the Google Play Store. As mentioned, Soraka is an adware that displays misleading advertisements on the cell phone's display. Rispetto ai classici adware, però, Soraka ha un funzionamento subdolo: rimane nascosto per un certo periodo e poi comincia a inondare il dispositivo di pubblicità, anche quando lo smartphone è in standby, in modo da massimizzare i guadagni. Il malware è anche in grado di capire se è attivo un antivirus in modo da nascondersi nei meandri più nascosti del cellulare.
Quali sono le 104 app pericolose da cancellare subito dallo smartphone Android
White Ops Threat Intelligence ha pubblicato la lista delle 104 applicazioni da cancellare immediatamente. Nella maggior parte dei casi si tratta di app rilasciate sul Google Play Store tra il mese di settembre e quello di dicembre.
