Spanish off-screen series fans, report! In recent years, the Iberian Peninsula has produced a lot of content capable of conquering an audience of all ages and fans of different genres.
The reason is related to the recipe of each title: a compelling plot, well characterized characters and controversial themes, capable of arousing deep reflections. One example of all is Vis a Vis - the price of redemption, the successful series released by Netflix that recounts the degrading and violent life inside a Spanish women's prison. The protagonists are them, the prisoners of Crus del Sur who must struggle to survive in an environment where ruthless rules of power and submission apply. Those who have watched Vis a Vis and have grown fond of the stories of Zulema (Najwa Nimri), Macarena (Maggie Civantos) and the other inmates can enjoy other similar series available on the streaming platform.
Orange is the new black
Orange is the new black is the American version of Vis a Vis. The show is inspired by the memoirs of Piper Kerman, collected in the book Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison.
The protagonist is called Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and she is sentenced to 15 months of imprisonment at the Litchfield Women's Prison, because a few years earlier she had transported a suitcase full of money illegally on behalf of her lover, a drug dealer. Later, however, Piper managed to build a law-abiding life together with her new boyfriend Larry Bloom.
Piper within the prison forges a special bond with some women, whose lives are told through flashbacks. The theme is therefore very similar to that of Vis a Vis.
Orange is the new black is available on Netflix.
The Yard
We remain inside a women's prison to learn the story of Deniz, a woman who shot her husband after years of violence, ending her freedom.
Deniz is convicted of murder and thus enters the prison where, right from the start, she knows the unwritten laws related to the balance of power: as soon as she arrives in the penitentiary she interfaces with the two matriarchs Azra and Kudret, who have a strong character similar to that of Zulema from Vis a Vis.

Prison Break
We always talk about life in prison, but this time the protagonists are two men and to be precise two brothers. Prison Break is centered on the story of Lincoln, who, despite proclaiming his innocence, is convicted for the murder of an important American tycoon.
His brother Michael decides to break him out of prison, but to accomplish his plan he must be incarcerated in the same penitentiary. So he fakes a bank robbery and joins his brother behind bars.
The story is compelling and is now in its fifth season. It is currently available on Netflix.
