ESET researchers have uncovered 42 apps that hide adware, a very dangerous smartphone virus. Here's what they are
Once again, the Google Play Store becomes the star of a cybersecurity report. Once again, cybersecurity firm ESET has discovered 42 applications on Google's online store that are hiding adware, a particular type of virus that displays misleading ads on the smartphone screen.
The 42 applications were discovered by IT researcher Lukas Stefanko, an expert in the field who had already uncovered other dangerous apps in previous weeks that should be deleted immediately from your Android smartphone. In this case, the 42 apps have reached a total of 8 million downloads, thus infecting quite a few users around the world. The type of apps is very diverse: adware has been found inside video games, service to record video, audio or to download movies for free. The researcher alerted Google, which promptly removed the apps from its online store. But once again, the Play Store proved to be weak in preventing the publication of apps that are dangerous to the health of the smartphone.

Adware is a particular type of virus that is very popular among smartphones. They are not as dangerous as banking trojans, for example, but they are equally annoying. They don't go looking for personal information, but simply display ads on the screen. Over and over again. For every user click, they earn a small amount.

Alcune delle app che nascondono l’adware
L’adware individuato dai ricercatori di ESET ha un nome specifico: Ashas. Non è la prima volta che viene trovato all’interno delle applicazioni presenti sul Google Play Store, e purtroppo non sarà nemmeno l’ultima.
Le 42 app scoperte da Lukas Stefanko hanno totalizzato in totale 8 milioni di download in tutto il Mondo. Si tratta per lo più di videogame, app fake (come ad esempio “Mini lite for facebook”), oppure servizi che permettono di ascoltare la radio o di scaricare video dalla Rete.
Rispetto alle altre app adware, queste scovate da ESET sono diventate “più furbe”. Le pubblicità invasive non vengono mostrate immediatamente dopo l’installazione, ma solo dopo alcuni giorni. In modo da poter confondere le idee dell’utente che non riesce a capire quale app crea il problema. Inoltre, l’icona dell’app sparisce dal drawer per non permettere la disinstallazione.

I consigli per difendersi dagli adware sono sempre gli stessi. E tutti molto semplici da seguire. In primis non scaricate app che abbiano recensioni molto negative o tutte positive. Infine, non fidatevi delle aziende che non conoscete o che sono arrivate da poco sullo store di Google: potrebbe essere una copertura per lanciare app infette.
