Amazon aims at Italian Serie A rights

On Prime Video, Serie A soccer matches could soon arrive: Amazon ready to make an offer.

Amazon is ready to expand its Prime Video offer and aims once again at sports. After having grabbed some Champions League matches, now it is ready to make an offer for the streaming rights of the Italian soccer Serie A, opening the challenge to competitors such as Sky and Dazn.

Last December came the official confirmation that Amazon has purchased the rights to broadcast live the best matches of Uefa Champions League for three seasons starting from 2021/2022. Soccer Wednesday therefore passes on Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service dedicated to Prime customers. According to Bloomberg news agency, Jeff Bezos' giant would also be ready to submit a bid of at least 1.15 billion euros to grab the streaming rights of Serie A matches, which is looking for new funds after the hard blow dealt by the Covid-19 pandemic to the football sector in Italy.

Amazon and Serie A: the possible bid for Prime Video

At the moment, rumors only speak of a 1.15 billion euro bid at least that Amazon could present on January 26 next to participate in the auction of Serie A TV rights for the three-year period 2021-2024. If so, it would open the challenge with Sky and Dazn, which in recent seasons have held the exclusive rights to the Italian championship.

The offer would come at a time of deep crisis for Italian soccer, linked to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the closure of stadiums to fans, and decades of underinvestment.
