Anche questa volta gli hacker hanno sfruttato la grande attesa per la novità dell'anno: circolano diverse versioni fake di Windows 11, una più pericolosa dell'altra.
Il 24 giugno Microsoft ha annunciato ufficialmente Windows 11, il suo nuovo sistema operativo, l’erede dell’attuale Windows 10. Non ha, però, comunicato esattamente quando verrà rilasciato, limitandosi a dire che arriverà “entro le feste“, cioè entro fine 2021. Gli hacker, come al solito, hanno preso la palla al balzo e hanno iniziato a diffondere versioni fake di Windows 11.
Il meccanismo è il solito, già ben noto: ogni volta che c’è un nuovo software che cattura l’interesse di grandi masse di potenziali utenti i cybercriminali ne creano una versione falsa, imbottita di codice pericoloso. In the past it happened also with video games and even movies and TV series, circulated through unofficial channels like forums and "peer-to-peer" networks. It has happened again this time and the first reports have already arrived: hackers have acted quickly and well, because the fake Windows 11 update has been made in a way that makes it look credible to less savvy users.
Fake Windows 11 Update: how to recognize it
The fake Windows 11 update is circulated in the form of large files of hundreds and hundreds of GB - some of them are even 1.75 GB long. Questa particolarità è voluta: dentro al file ci sono tonnellate di dati inutili, ma la dimensione elevata lascia intendere che, effettivamente, all’interno del file ci sia un vero sistema operativo.
Anche i nomi di questi file sono stati studiati a puntino per indurre in errore l’utente. Sono nomi come “86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe“, che lascia intendere che all’interno del file ci sia una copia di Windows 11 e la chiave di attivazione.
Naturalmente non è affatto così: dentro quei file ci sono dei programmi di installazione, ma non per il nuovo sistema operativo di Microsoft. Instead of Windows 11, in fact, they install different types of malicious software (there are several variants of this threat): some just install useless software, others install relatively harmless adware (viruses that display unwanted advertisements) while still others, the most dangerous ones, install real trojans, i.e. viruses that download other, even more dangerous viruses.
How to install Windows 11 (the real one)
Windows 11 hasn't arrived yet, so any installation file of the new operating system that the user may find on the net is a complete fake. However, Microsoft has made available to everyone the preview version of Windows 11, which is not the complete operating system with all the features, but almost.
To get it, however, you need to subscribe to the Windows Insider Program, that is the Microsoft program dedicated to beta testers. After enrolling in the program, the user enters the list of potential testers of Windows 11. The new operating system will soon be offered as an optional update in Windows Update.
