Digital terrestrial 2020: how to continue to see TV

From 2021 will start the switch off of digital terrestrial, but already from December 18, 2019 you can buy a new TV using the discount of 50 euros

The deadline has been set: June 30, 2022. From this day, all TVs present in Italy must be enabled to receive the signal via the new DVB T2 technology, otherwise it will be impossible to continue watching TV channels. Ten years after the switch-off that brought Italian television into the new era, passing from the analogue to the digital signal, Italians must get ready for a new passage. This time from DVB T to digital terrestrial T2.

This is a new broadcasting technology that will improve channel quality by using the HEVC video compression standard and ensuring support for up to 8K resolution.

All TV sets put on sale after January 1, 2017 are obliged by law to support DVB T2, while for those purchased before this date you need to check if the DVB T2 sticker is present on the box.

How to continue watching TV with DVB T2

To be sure of continuing to watch TV channels after the switch off is complete (June 20, 2022, but in some regions it will be sooner), you must have an ad hoc device. Those who bought a television set before January 2017 will be forced to buy a new one or rely on an ad hoc decoder.

The Government has launched a fund of 151 million euros to help the most disadvantaged income groups in the purchase of a television set or a new decoder.

Bonus Tv, how it works and who it is intended for

The fund has taken the name of Bonus TV and has been published in the Official Gazette. This is a discount that families with low income can use when buying a new TV or decoder enabled to HEVC Main 10 encoding. It must be specified that the Bonus TV is up to 50 euros: if the device purchased costs less, the discount will cover the entire cost.

The Bonus TV starts on December 18, 2019 and lasts until December 2022. The fund launched by the Government has 151 million euros divided into four years: 25 million for 2019, 76 million for 2020, 25 million for 2021, 25 million for 2022. The discount is obtained directly at the time of purchase: the merchant must present a form with which it self-certifies to be part of the ISEE 1 or ISEE 2 band (income up to 20,000 euros).

The merchant recovers the discount in the form of a tax credit at the first tax return.
