The big jump to DVB-T2 starts with an important technical change on 9 RAI channels: here is what will happen and what viewers must do to continue to see all RAI channels.
The switch off from the current first generation Digital Terrestrial Television to the second generation, DVB-T2, has been postponed by the Government but certainly not cancelled: there is more time for broadcasters to update their transmission tools, and also for viewers to change TV if it is not compatible, but the switchover to the new standard is not under discussion. Rai has already adapted and announced important changes for 9 of its channels broadcast on digital.
Changes that concern an important technical aspect: the codec used to compress images. As foreseen by the roadmap of the Ministry of Economic Development, the old Mpeg-2 codec will be replaced by the new Mpeg-4. Nuovo ma non troppo, visto che l’Mpeg-4 è nato nel 1998 e sarà sostituito, l’anno prossimo, da un ulteriore codec più moderno: l’HEVC del 2013. Il passaggio da Mpeg-2 ad Mpeg-4 comporterà l’impossibilità di sintonizzare i canali su tutti i TV e i decoder che non sono in grado di decodificare questo tipo di segnale. Si tratta dei modelli più vecchi, in particolare di quelli non compatibili con l’alta definizione. La Rai, per questo, sta avvertendo i telespettatori che, da una certa data in poi, potrebbero non vedere più alcuni canali con la loro attuale televisione.
Canali RAI: cosa cambia e quando
La data scelta dalla Rai è quella del 20 ottobre 2021 (inizialmente era stato deciso il giorno del 15 ottobre, ma poi è stato cambiato). Il 20 ottobre 2021 passeranno in Mpeg-4 i seguenti canali Rai:
- Rai 4
- Rai 5
- Rai Movie
- Rai Yoyo
- Rai Sport+ HD
- Rai Storia
- Rai Gulp
- Rai Premium
- Rai Scuola
Non verrà inizialmente modificata, invece, la codifica per i canali Rai principali, quelli con gli ascolti maggiori: Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3 e Rai News 24.
Rai in Mpeg-4: come continuare a vederla
Tutti i canali che cambieranno codifica potranno essere sintonizzati e visualizzati correttamente solo da televisori e decoder compatibili con l’Mpeg-4. All HD-compatible devices are also compatible with Mpeg-4, therefore those who are currently able to view channels (even non-Ri) in high definition will have no problems after October 20.
It is worth remembering that it is possible to check the compatibility of one's reception system and TV with HD simply by going to channel 501 (Rai 1 HD): if the image is displayed correctly, then the whole system is compatible with HD and with Mpeg-4. Otherwise it will be necessary to buy a new TV set in order to continue watching the 9 Rai channels that will change encoding.
However, it should also be specified that it will still be necessary to retune all TV sets, or external decoders, even if they are compatible with Mpeg-4 and HD.
