New step for the transition to digital terrestrial DVB-T2: has begun, in the first Region, the refarming of frequencies that will soon affect the whole of Italy
Almost a month ago, to be precise from October 20, 2021, Italian TV finally began the switch off to second generation digital terrestrial (DVB-T2), with the passage of about fifteen national broadcasters from the old Mpeg-2 encoding to the more recent Mpeg-4 encoding. Now we are about to enter the next phase and, to tell the truth, Sardinia is already in the middle of it since yesterday 15th November.
The new phase of the switch off is characterized by the so-called "refarming of frequencies", that is by the progressive "liberation" of the 694-790 MHz frequencies (the famous "700 band"). These frequencies were assigned by the State, through a public auction that took place at the end of 2018, to telephone operators. Operatori che, complessivamente, hanno pagato 6,5 miliardi di euro per acquistare il diritto di usare la banda 700 per la rete telefonica 5G e che, adesso, non vedono l’ora che le emittenti TV che trasmettono su quelle frequenze spengano i ripetitori. Solo allora, infatti, gli operatori telefonici potranno attivare le celle 5G. La road map del Ministero dello Sviluppo economico prevede che il refarming avvenga per aree geografiche, in tempi diversi, e la Sardegna è proprio la prima di queste aree. Vediamo quindi che sta succedendo in Sardegna, per capire cosa succederà a breve nel resto d’Italia.
DVB-T2: il refarming in Sardegna
La Sardegna corrisponde all’Area 1a della road map del Ministero, per la quale il refarming è previsto nel periodo che va dal 15 novembre al 18 dicembre 2021 (ma in realtà tutto dovrebbe concludersi già il 2 dicembre). A sua volta l’Area 1a è divisa in sotto-aree, che corrispondono a comuni e province e che hanno date diverse per lo spegnimento dei ripetitori TV:
- 15-17 novembre 2021 – Iglesiente
- 16 novembre 2021 – Sulcis
- 18 novembre 2021 – Cagliari, Gerrei, Marmilla e Villa Verde (OR)
- 19 novembre 2021 – Oristano e provincia
- 22 novembre 2021 – Barbagia
- 23-24 novembre 2021 – Sassari e provincia (parte)
- 25-26 novembre 2021 – Gallura
- 29-30 novembre 2021 – Nuoro e provincia (parte)
- 01 dicembre 2021 – Ogliastra (parte)
- 02 dicembre 2021 – Sarrabus e Ogliastra (parte)
Che succede con il refarming
Ma cosa sta succedendo, nella pratica, in Sardegna? What is happening is that all the TV broadcasters that until a couple of days ago were transmitting on a frequency within the 700 band are now switching off their repeaters and switching them back on again on other frequencies assigned by the State to compensate for the loss (thanks to the changeover to Mpeg-4 it is possible to transmit more than one broadcaster on the same frequencies).
For TV viewers this always means the same thing: re-tuning of the TV. Very often the retuning is automatic, so the user doesn't even notice the frequency change, while other times it has to be done manually via the remote control and the TV menu. In any case, however, the LCN numbers of the broadcasters are not changed, so the viewer will find his favorite TVs in the usual positions of the remote control, even after the refarming.
Which TVs change frequency
Most of the TVs affected by the frequency change taking place in Sardinia are local TVs, but there are also national ones. Sky TG24, ad esempio, sta passando dalle 50-54 alla 46. Per quanto riguarda i canali RAI (Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3 TGR Regionale e Rai News), invece, la data prevista per il cambio di frequenza in Sardegna è quella del 4 gennaio.
Refarming: le prossime Regioni
Come già accennato, ciò che sta succedendo in Sardegna è solo un assaggio di ciò che succederà nei prossimi mesi in tutta Italia. Il prossimo step è previsto tra il 3 gennaio e il 15 marzo 2022 e interesserà due aree, ben più corpose e popolate della Sardegna: l’Area 2 e l’Area 3 che, insieme, raggruppano praticamente tutte le Regioni del Nord Italia, Liguria esclusa:
- Valle d’Aosta
- Piemonte
- Lombardia
- Trentino-Alto Adige
- Veneto
- Friuli-Venezia Giulia
- Emilia Romagna
In queste Regioni succederà, a partire da gennaio 2022, ciò che sta succedendo in questi giorni in Sardegna: le emittenti dovranno liberare la banda 700 e i telespettatori dovranno risintonizzare i canali.
