Ginny & Georgia: all about the Netflix original series

Some people, because of the themes covered, have compared Ginny and Georgia to a cult television series like "Gilmore Girls." And rightly so, considering that the original Netflix show, dated 2021, tries to evoke just that same chemistry that we have seen for years on the screen thanks to the Gilmore family.

Designed by Sarah Lampert, Ginny & Georgia then tells of the special relationship between the two protagonists, mother and daughter, staging feelings, vicissitudes and memories. As well as a good dose of new situations that, playfully, will test the bond between the two. The series of the colossus of Los Gatos, which all subscribers can watch in streaming, consists of a first season of 10 episodes, and has been renewed by the "big N" for a second season.

Ginny & Georgia: the plot

A little 'everyone started to get interested in the plot of Ginny and Georgia on Netflix thinking to find the same vibe of a show like "A Gilmore Girls". On the other hand, the premises point exactly in that direction, presenting us with a dramedy made of a very young mother, a daughter who despite her age is in many ways more mature than the first, a picturesque American town in New England and dialogue always over the top, defined "sharp and lively" by the same production.

And yet, the serial work of Sarah Lampert knows how to be this and much more: several mystery turns in the progress of the episodes, with episodes full of secrets, deceptions and a cast of characters that will give a jolt to the narrative. Not to mention a certain thriller attitude that results in an unexpected ending.

The story of the Netflix original TV series focuses on a fifteen-year-old girl seen by all as restless and rather awkward, Virginia Miller, called Ginny, and her mother Georgia, a woman in her thirties very charming, dynamic and full of energy. Ginny in many occasions thinks she is much more mature than Georgia, who in the meantime has decided to give a new life to her family at all costs.

After many years of moving and an almost nomadic existence, the woman absolutely wants to move indefinitely to a delightful town in New England, Massachusetts, called Wellsbury. It's the only way she can give her two children - the other is Austin, Ginny's 9-year-old half-brother - what they've never had: a normal everyday life.

Bringing roots to Wellsbury means for Ginny changing schools and settling into a new, prestigious high school.

Ginny & Georgia: cast e personaggi

On the other hand, her daughter, of mixed ethnicity, is a fifteen-year-old girl who is as bright as she is vulnerable and rebellious. Always very outspoken and with a developed intellect, she hides an insecure soul, which will come to the surface even more when she moves to the wealthy town of Massachusetts.

At their side we have the very young Diesel La Torraca, who plays Austin, Georgia's 9-year-old son who is always in disarray but very sweet and innocent. Austin is the one who, of all the members of his family, has most clung to the promise of a new life among the quiet of Wellsbury. Also in the cast of Ginny & Georgia is Jennifer Robertson, who plays Ellen, a working mother much more down-to-earth than her middle-class neighbors. She has two children both 15 years old, twins Maxine and Marcus, and is known for always being outspoken.

Not surprisingly, she speaks only what she thinks, and lives across the street from Georgia and her two children. One of them, Marcus, is played by Felix Mallard, the classic bad boy who likes to show up tough and assertive, and who you don't want to get a crush on. Of course he will be immediately intrigued by Ginny's arrival in town. The twin sister Maxine has instead the face of Sara Waisglass. She is a quirky girl, very smart and quite popular, easygoing and at the same time confident. She has a crush on Georgia, and quickly manages to make friends with her daughter, Ginny.

Scott Porter then plays the mayor Paul Randolph. As the first citizen of Wellsbury, Paul is a politically committed and very determined man. He will be immediately attracted to Georgia, recognizing that the woman is a true force of nature. We still have Raymond Ablack, who plays Joe, an environmentalist, particularly manly man. Joe is the owner of Wellsbury's farm-to-table restaurant, the Blue Farm Cafe, and can't help but notice Georgia when the latter first arrives in town.

Ginny & Georgia: a book for the series?

Considering Ginny and Georgia's excellent plot as a series, many among the fans are convinced that it is inspired by a book. So much so that online you can find dozens and dozens of threads on industry forums pointing to a novel as the "muse" for Sarah Lampert. Despite the many rumors about it, in reality things are not like that.

The one involving mother and daughter is an original story, although in some ways it recalls a cult show like "Gilmore Girls", "A Mamma for a Friend", here in Italy. With the ending deliberately left open by the first season, there is no book that reveals what fate has reserved for the two protagonists and all the other characters involved.

Ginny & Georgia 2: second season coming

Two months after the release of Ginny and Georgia, the heads of Netflix have announced that the TV series has been renewed for a second season, and therefore will return with a new cycle of episodes. A decision that should not come as a surprise, considering the data released by the streaming giant: in the first four weeks since its release, Ginny & Georgia has attracted the attention of 52 million subscribers, being particularly popular in the U.S., Australia, Brazil and Kenya. The aforementioned open ending, in any case imposed a second season, in which the inhabitants of Wellsbury will still have much to tell.
