Gossip Girl: all about the TV series and the finale

One of the most popular TV series of the 2000s, first aired on Mya and then on Italia 1, is Gossip Girl: the plot, the cast and the finale.

"I'm Gossip Girl, your only source of news about the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite". So opens each episode of the television series created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage for The CW television station. The show, based on the homonymous novels written by Cecily von Ziegesar, aired for the first time in 2007 and ended after six seasons in 2012. The title in the original language of each episode is a play on words that clearly refers to the name of a famous film.

In a very short time, Gossip Girl has established itself as one of the most popular and at the same time divisive series of the 2000s, daughter of the era of bloggers and that and today can be seen as a true prediction of a filtered and glossy world as that entrusted to the pages of Instagram. A teen cult in all respects that has deserved a modern reboot, and that has also hit Italy: from us, the TV series was broadcast in absolute premiere by Mya, Mediaset Premium pay channel, from January 19, 2008 to March 5, 2013, and then landed in clear on Itala 1 from January 7, 2009 to January 4, 2014.

Gossip Girl: the plot

The TV series Gossip Girl, inspired by the cycle of novels by the writer Cecily von Ziegesar, is made of glitter and intrigue, but also of love, friendship and business. Set in Manhattan, New York, it closely follows the vicissitudes of some young people from the Upper East Side, an upscale neighborhood with a glossy taste. We thus make the acquaintance of Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass: all of them, in some way, playing at being adults, among daily shopping, luxury hotels and social events.

They will soon be joined by Dan Humphrey and his sister Jenny, teenagers who live in the working-class neighborhood of Brooklyn, far from the comforts to which their companions are accustomed. These are all characters that have helped launch the careers of actors of the caliber of Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley. At their side, in the role of narrator, Kristen Bell, formerly starring in the series Veronica Mars. And here she gives voice to the Gossip Girl blog, introducing viewers to the episode.

The universe of these New York upstarts is shaken in the first season by the return to the city of Serena, announced on the pages of the blog Gossip Girl, always punctually informed about the scandals involving the rich students of the Upper East Side of the Big Apple and their parents. Upon the girl's return from the boarding school for which she had suddenly left without giving explanations to anyone, Blair is still angry for not having received any news from her friend since her departure, not being able to vent to anyone about her family problems.

So she is not at all happy about Serena's unexpected comeback, and tries to cut her off from her old circle of friends and acquaintances, fearing to lose the title of Queen of Constance Billard. Blaire, in fact, has managed to conquer the title in the last year thanks to the absence of Serena, who has always been more popular than her.

This is just the beginning of a story that has influenced an era, not so much for the writing as for having been able to tell with flair a sparkling reality, fashion and beauty trends, customs and consumption of its years. And it did so using the virtual pen of the blogger Gossip Girl, whose true identity will be discovered only in the final, last episode of the sixth season. First and foremost in capturing and divulging every scandalous detail about the lives of the protagonists, she has among her favorite victims Eric, Serena's brother, her best friend and her boyfriend, Blair and Nate respectively.

Gossip Girl: personaggi e cast

Teenagers acting like adults. Adults acting like teenagers, hiding secrets, spreading gossip. All surrounded by real, opulent wealth. And belonging to this community was so elite, you couldn't even buy your way in. It was a birthright. A birthright I didn't have. And my greatest achievements would never earn it for me. Everything I knew about that world I knew from the books I'd read. But they gave me an idea: if I wasn't born into that world, maybe I could write my way into it.

In the final episode of the glossy show, two marriages are also celebrated: that of Chuck and Blair, who also have a son, Henry, and that of Serena and Dan himself.

The Gossip Girl reboot

The fame of Gossip Girl has prompted HBO to make a reboot, coming out in Italy on Sky Series on October 27, 2021. In fact, it's a true sequel to the original series, following the story of a new group of students at Manhattan's Constance Billard. Group that takes over the school always under the watchful eye of Gossip Girl, to which lends the voice once again Kristen Bell. The mysterious blogger has changed as the dynamics of the network have changed, and she wants to show how much social media and the city of New York have changed accordingly with the passage of time. For now, the reboot consists of one 12-episode season.
