Gossip Girl: all the previews on the long-awaited sequel

The famous American teen drama is ready to return to streaming. The plot will be different from the original but with some commonalities. Here's what's new

Gossip Girl is the cult TV series aired since 2007 that, for several years, has kept glued to the screen a large segment of the public. Twelve years later, HBO has ordered a sequel causing the enthusiasm of many young people.

The sequel will be a total of 10 episodes set about 10 years after the events of the mother plot. There will be no old characters, such as Serena van del Woodsen, Blair Waldorf or Chuck Bass, but a completely new cast that will move in a profoundly changed New York, dominated by new technologies and social networks. The sequel to the famous teen drama will therefore have a more serious and critical connotation than the past one? According to some rumors, it will talk about social network addiction and cyberbullying, important social issues of the moment. The protagonists will always be some teenagers from the Upper East Side. So far few details about the show are known, including the plot, the cast and the presumed release date.

Gossip Girl: sequel plot

The creators of the sequel will be the same as the parent TV series and will also play the role of producers. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will be busy writing the episodes along with showrunner Joshua Safran. The storyline is set a full 10 years after the events of the original Gossip Girl.

The plot revolves around a group of kids studying at the prestigious Constance Billard School. They communicate via smartphones and continuously use platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and others and through these they exchange news and gossip about the school and other environments they attend. We are therefore faced with a society evolved from that of the original plot.

It seems that this time there will not be a new blogger who controls the lives of all, but we will talk about a world in which, through their phones and a connection, everyone can be a "Gossip Girl".

Creator Joshua Safran described the new TV series this way, "It will show the world as it looks today, from a world where wealth and privilege come from and how they are managed."

Cast of the new Gossip Girl

Kristen Bell, the narrator voice of the mysterious girl who also accompanied the protagonists of the old episodes, will return. This is an important thread from the original that the production has decided to bring to the new show as well.

Aside from that, the cast will consist of new characters and, at the behest of the creators, will be inclusive. Joshua Safran: "This time the protagonists are not all white and some belong to the LGBTQ community."

So far we know that in the cast we will find Emily Alyn Lind, who has already participated in Doctor Sleep, Whitney Peak, Johnathan Fernandez and Eli Brown. There will also be some lesser known actors such as Tavi Gevinson, Savvanah Smith, Jordan Alexander, Adam Chanler-Berat and Zion Moreno. We don't know what their roles will be yet.

Alyn Lind will play Audrey, a teenager who has been partnered with her boyfriend for years but in the series begins to want to explore the world, according to Deadline. Of course, the stories will be those typical of teen dramas: it will talk about love, friendships and other adolescent problems.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known if the cast will be the actors of the original series, but do not rule out surprises in this sense.

When will the sequel to Gossip Girl

The shooting was supposed to begin in March, but were postponed due to the pandemic that has hit hard even the United States. According to new rumors, the work will resume in October and will take place between Los Angeles, New York and Vancouver.

If all goes as planned, the new episodes of Gossip Girl will be released in 2021 but it is not yet known which platform will be awarded the streaming in Italy. Currently the 6 seasons of the mother season are available on Netflix.
