Here comes the super charge for the smartphone: to 100% in just 15 minutes

Qualcomm launches its Quick Charge 5.0 fast charging system: in just 5 minutes it charges 50% of the smartphone, 100% by waiting only 15 minutes

The challenge in the world of smartphones also passes by the fast charging technologies and this is well known by Qualcomm, which has launched its Quick Charge 5.0 system. The Quick Charge system promises to charge a 4500 mAh battery by 50% in just 5 minutes, and 100% in less than 15 minutes.

As smartphone batteries become more and more capacious, charging systems must also adapt. The new Quick Charge system improves in efficiency, doesn't dissipate excessive heat, and is designed to have full compatibility with Snapdragon 865 and 865+ processors, as well as SoCs that will be designed and manufactured in the future, and we could see it bundled in some smartphones as early as September 2020.

Quick Charge 5.0, how super charging works

After years of silence in the world of super charging, Qualcomm is back to make its voice heard with the Quick Charge 5.0. The innovation of this system lies in the choice of batteries and their configuration: two 4.5V lithium batteries that placed in series obtain twice the voltage, doubling also the charging speed. In order to manage the current flow, the charger is equipped with a new component called "Next Gen PMIC2" which can manage up to 20 V input, this implies that the power supply will also have to support up to this input voltage.

It is also important for these devices to dissipate the temperature as well as possible, to avoid heat damage, a result that would have been achieved by its creators. It seems that the new charger is able to maintain a temperature 10 degrees lower than its predecessors. The new Quick Charge 5.0 power supplies will therefore have thermal protection.

Quick Charge 5.0, an intelligent charging system

Qualcomm for its Quick Charge system is also studying the backward compatibility with the previous ones, but above all it aims to safeguard the battery and the power supply through an intelligent charging system. For this reason, it has included the Qualcomm Battery Saver feature, to preserve battery life for a long time.

The company is also aware that a power supply might have different specifications than those reported by the manufacturer, it has developed a technology called Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities. This technology, built into Quick Charge 5.0, tests the voltage, current and temperatures of the connected power supply, lowering the charging capacity if the specs are not adequate to support the maximum 100 W it can deliver. A feature that makes Quick Charge 5.0 not only an efficient fast-charging system, but also a versatile one that sets new standards for performance and will give a boost in the evolution of systems now on sale in the market.
