How to configure Tiscali modem

Do you want to give up the modem on loan from Tiscali and buy one that best suits your needs? Here are the parameters to be set to surf

If you have subscribed to a Tiscali offer for ADSL or fiber connection, thanks to the recent resolution on the "Free Modem" of AGCOM you have the opportunity to give up the modem router on loan and use one you already own to save the cost of the modem from the subscription.

To do so, however, you must set some parameters within the configuration of the modem, which must be compatible with the protocols and technologies used by Tiscali to transmit data. Tiscali offers both connections with classic ADSL technology and with VDSL and EVDSL technology (also called FTTC, Fiber To The Cabinet) or FTTH (Fiber To The Home). Modem requirements and parameters vary depending on the type of connection.

Router requirements for Tiscali EVDSL connections (up to 200 MB/sec)

To be compatible with Tiscali EVDSL connections your router must support the following protocols:

802.1Q (multiple VLAN support)

ITU G.993.2 (VDSL2, profiles 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 12a, 12b, 17a, 30a, 35b)

PPPoE encapsulation and 802.1Q

Router requirements for Tiscali VDSL connections (up to 100 MB/sec)

To work with Tiscali VDSL offerings, however, your router must support the protocols:

802.1Q (multiple VLAN support)

ITU G.993.2 (VDSL2, profiles 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 12a, 12b, 17a)

PPPoE encapsulation and 802.1Q.

Router requirements for Tiscali ADSL connections (up to 20 MB/sec)

For a Tiscali ADSL connection, however, the free modem must support the following protocols:

ITU-T G.992.1(G.DMT)

ITU-T G.992.2(G.Lite)

ITU-T G.994.1 (G.hs)

How to connect the modem to the Tiscali network

If your free router supports the technologies used by Tiscali, then you can use it instead of the one on loan. The first thing to do is to connect it to the network, then you'll have to configure it.

If you have subscribed to a fiber FTTH offer and your free modem has a fiber optic input, then you'll have to insert the optical cable that the Tiscali technician brought to your home in that input. If the modem does not have an optical input then you will have to connect it to an ONT (Optical Network Terminal, a small box that acts as a bridge between the fiber and the router): the optical cable will enter the ONT and the router will be connected to the ONT via an Ethernet network cable. Once the router is connected to the fiber, you will have to connect the router to a computer via Ethernet cable to set the parameters. Once the configuration is complete you can disconnect the router from the PC: the two devices will communicate via wireless.

If you have subscribed to a Tiscali ADSL offer you will not have any optical cable entering your home, but a normal telephone cable that you will have to insert in the relevant port of the router. Then you'll have to connect the router to the PC with an Ethernet cable, as described above, to configure the modem router with Tiscali ADSL parameters.

How to configure the free modem for Tiscali

Now you're ready to enter the right options in the router to enable it to surf the Internet on the Tiscali network. With the router connected to the PC, you have to open a browser window and type in the device's IP address which is usually 192.168.1.1 but, if it is different, you can find it either in the user manual or on the back of the modem router.

  • USER-VLAN: 835
  • Protocollo:            (PPPoE) PPP over Ethernet – (RCF 2516)
  • Encapsulation: 1Q

  • VPI 8
  • VCI 35
  • Protocollo:             (PPPoA) PPP over ATM – (RCF 2364)
  • Encapsulation: Virtual Circuit – Multiplexing (VC-MUX)
  • Indirizzo DNS Primario: Assegnato dal server
  • Indirizzo DNS Secondario: Assegnato dal server

Qualora questi parametri ADSL non dovessero funzionare, puoi provare con questi:

  • VPI 8
  • VCI 36
  • Protocollo:            (PPPoE) PPP over Ethernet – (RCF 2516)
  • Encapsulation: Logical Link Control (LLC)
  • Indirizzo DNS Primario: Assegnato dal server
