Immuni, the app is back available for some Huawei smartphones: here’s which ones

Immuni is again available on the Google Play Store for Huawei and Honor smartphones. The app can be downloaded and installed

Immuni is again available for Huawei/Honor smartphones on the Google Play Store. The announcement came in the evening of June 5, with the confirmation also from the Chinese company: for the moment Immuni works and can be downloaded on the Huawei P20, P20 Pro and the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. In the coming days, the app will return to be usable on all other smartphones from the Chinese giant.

But what happened in these first days of the Immuni app's debut? Right from the start, many users started reporting in reviews of the app on the Google Play Store some issues with how it works with different Huawei/Honor devices. As soon as the app was put in the background, the "VOCID-19 exposure notifications" feature was turned off. And this is not a minor tool, but the one the entire app runs on. That's why Bending Spoons, Google and Huawei took prompt action and in a little more than 24 hours fixed the problem: as of now, you can use the Immuni app again on some Huawei smartphones.

Why Immuni app didn't work on Huawei smartphones

According to leaks in recent days, the compatibility problem between the Immuni app and Huawei/Honor smartphones was caused by the "Power Saver" feature. The Chinese company's devices have a special feature that tends to automatically disable all apps in the background in order to increase battery life. This led the smartphone to "turn off" Bluetooth and consequently also the Immuni app and the Covid-19 exposure notification system.

With a software update it seems that the problem has been temporarily fixed for the first Huawei smartphone models (a total of four: P20, P20 Pro, P30 and P30 Pro). A further update of Google Play Services is expected in the coming days to allow the download of the app (which had been momentarily blocked for the devices of the Chinese company) for all other models as well.
