Guest WLAN - how to set up the function on the router

To ensure that your guests have access to the WLAN network when they visit, it is recommended that you set up a special guest WLAN. We show you here why it makes sense to set it up and what procedure is necessary to activate the function on your router.

Why it makes sense to set up a guest WLAN

Many WLAN routers offer you the option of setting up a separate guest WLAN for visitors. This allows your guests to access the Internet during a visit to your home, but they do not have access to your normal home network. On the one hand, this is advantageous for protecting devices such as security cameras, TVs or WLAN speakers from unauthorized access, but on the other hand, it also prevents viruses from entering your private WLAN network.

How to activate the guest WLAN on your router

Once you have decided to set up separate WLAN access for your guests, it is necessary to activate the corresponding function on your router before using it for the first time. To do this, open the user interface of your router by typing in its IP address in the browser and confirming with "Enter"". If your router is a Fritzbox or a Speedport, you can also access the user interface by entering "http://fritz.box" or "http://speedport.ip".
  1. Then log in to the user interface and navigate to the "WLAN" section in the menu.
  2. Click there on the option "Guest Access" and select "Enable Guest Access" to activate the guest WLAN.
  3. Now still select a name for your guest WLAN and set a password so that the network is protected against unauthorized access.
