What is Vanilla WoW and where does the term come from?

Vanilla WoW is a flowery description for classic WoW, i.e. the first version before the first expansion The Burning Crusade appeared.

• The term vanilla is used for a specific reason: Among the ice creams of this world, vanilla is considered a classic and thus also a standard.
• Applied to WoW, vanilla consequently means the standard version, i.e. the original WoW.

The term has existed for more than ten years and thus became part of the community's vernacular. Currently, it is back in the spotlight, as WoW has been officially launched again in the Classic version. Either way, Vanilla WoW will always stand for the early days of the MMORPG.
