Turn off data roaming: How it works

Data roaming is a feature of your smartphone, tablet or surf stick that automatically finds available mobile networks abroad. While this feature can be useful for surfing the web while traveling, it can also be expensive. You can disable data roaming.

Why you should think about turning off data roaming

When abroad, different prices often apply for mobile Internet surfing. You can find out from your mobile provider in which countries you can use your tariff without restrictions. Although regulations on maximum co-payments due to the use of other networks came into force in 2017 in most EU countries, you can still pay up to 60 euros extra. In non-EU countries, it is recommended to deactivate data roaming in principle to avoid high costs.

Disable data roaming: Android

  1. Open the settings.
  2. Tap on "Wireless and network" and then select "More...".
  3. Decide on "Mobile networks" in the next menu.
  4. Now disable data roaming by tapping the entry.

Android 8: Turn off roaming

  1. Open the settings on Android 8 as well.
  2. Wählen Sie dann den Menüpunkt „SIM & Netzwerk“ und wählen Sie Ihre SIM-Karte unter „SIM-Einstellungen“ aus.
