What does DECT mean on the router? What it means

DECT is the abbreviation for a widely used radio standard. What it means when the imprint DECT is on your router or your phone and how exactly the radio standard DECT works, we will explain in this article.

Router: This is what the abbreviation DECT means

The abbreviation DECT stands for "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications" and is mainly found on cordless phones, but also on some routers. In detail, DECT is a radio standard that was introduced in 1993 and allows you to make wireless calls within a certain radius, around the base station of the phone.
  1. This works because the base station permanently sends a beacon signal, which is received by all DECT phones and used to access the DECT network.
  2. The range of a DECT phone can thereby be between 50 meters, if you are inside a building and 300 meters, if you are outdoors.
  3. If you want to increase the radius in which a DECT phone is usable, this goes by combining several DECT base stations and distribute them in a building.

How to connect your DECT phone to a router

If your router supports the use of phones that use DECT as a radio standard, it is necessary before the first use that you set up the phone in the user interface of the router. To do this, first open the user interface by entering the IP address of the router in the browser address line and confirming with "Enter". Then navigate in the user interface to "Telephony" and click on the button "Set up new device". Now still indicate that you want to add a phone and activate the option "DECT".
