Windows: Block individual web pages - how to do it

In Windows you have the possibility to block individual web pages. A good reason for this is, for example, that some websites spread Trojans or the content is not suitable for the user of the PC. Social media addiction is also easier to control with a block.

How to block individual web pages in Windows?

You don't need an external tool to block web pages anymore, because Windows already provides this function since version 7. This is how you perform the blocking:
  1. Open the folder "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\" and double-click the HOSTS file.
  2. Select "Editor" from the list of possible programs. Now put at the end of the file "127.0.0.1" and with a space after it the domain you want to block. So, for example, "http://www.UnerwünschteWebsite.com".
  3. Note that you must specify all domains individually.
  4. The IP address 127.0.0.1 points to the localhost, that is, your own PC. The data that is sent cannot be processed there. Instead, they are simply deleted.
  5. You can also use antivirus software. Most modern antivirus programs offer a website blocker right away. Here you can also set a password so that the settings can not be touched without your permission.
You can also block websites directly in most routers. Often you will find the setting under "Parental Control". Here you can simply add the pages to the blacklist.
