Nuove indiscrezioni confermano che non tutti i modelli di iPhone 12 saranno in grado di connettersi alle reti 5G alla massima velocità possibile
Nuovi rumor confermano che l’iPhone 12 sarà il primo smartphone 5G di Apple, ma che non tutti i modelli saranno compatibili con le onde “mmWave“, dette anche onde “millimetriche“. In altre parole non basterà un iPhone 12 base per connettersi alle reti 5G più veloci.
Le ultime indiscrezioni provengono dai fornitori di Apple e sono ben poco incoraggianti per chi aspetta iPhone 12 per navigare alla massima velocità con lo smartphone. Si parla, infatti, di un solo modello su quattro compatibile con le onde millimetriche: l’iPhone 12 Pro Max, cioè il più grande e costoso di tutti. Precedenti rumor, invece, parlavano di due modelli compatibili: iPhone 12 Pro e iPhone 12 Pro Max. L’unica cosa certa, quindi, è che i due modelli iPhone 12 e iPhone 12 Max saranno compatibili con le sole onde 5G di tipo “sub-6GHz" e che almeno iPhone 12 Pro Max lo sarà anche con quelle “mmWave“. Il vero dubbio, a questo punto, è su iPhone 12 Pro.
Onde mmWave: perché sono importanti
Le onde millimetriche sono quelle con la frequenza più alta nello spettro di onde utilizzabili per una connessione 5G. Più è alta la frequenza e minore è la distanza che può coprire l’onda, ma maggiore è la quantità di dati che può trasportare.
Ciò vuol dire che per sfruttare il 5G “veloce" è necessario uno smartphone in grado di gestire le onde millimetriche ed è necessario trovarsi vicini al ripetitore che le emette. And here comes out another prerequisite: the phone provider must also transmit on mmWave, otherwise the smartphone will not be able to use them.
The difference in speed between a 5G sub-6 GHz connection and a mmWave one is remarkable: while the first one arrives at most to transmit 400-500 Mbps of data, the second one arrives even over 1.5 Gbps. That is, three times as much. To make a comparison with the best current cellular networks, those 4G LTE Advanced (also called 4G Plus) have a theoretical maximum speed of about 300 Mbps.
iPhone 12 and 5G: what the leaks say
The latest rumor that is circulating, therefore, speaks of only one iPhone 12 compatible with millimeter waves. In the past, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had assured that all iPhone 12s will be able to connect to 5G networks, but he never specified with what technology.
Other analysts, including those at JP Morgan, swear instead that both high-end models will be able to use 5G mmWave. Finally, there's speculation in the field that only the iPhone 12 Pro Max sold in Korea, Japan, and the United States will be able to take advantage of the full 5G frequency spectrum. All we have to do is wait a few weeks to find out who's right.
