A new smartphone made in China aspires to take the top step of the gaming phone podium, and challenges the Asus ROG Phone II presented at IFA 2019 in Berlin. It 's the Nubia Red Magic 3s and will soon be on sale in Europe, including Italy.
This is a device, evolution of the already known Red Magic 3, which focuses everything on performance both by adopting a high-level hardware (and very high "brute power"), and NOT integrating many applications that are completely useless to a gamer and that steal storage space and resources by running in the background. To keep performance constant during long gaming sessions, finally, the Nubia Red Magic 3s is equipped with a sophisticated cooling system and a very capacious battery. The only real flaw of this smartphone, due to the cooling, is the high weight: 215 grams.
Nubia Red Magic 3s: technical specifications
Based on the power of the Nubia Red Magic 3s is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, assisted by an Adreno 640 GPU. The RAM, LPDDR4X type, comes in two sizes: 8 or 12 GB. Two sizes also for the internal storage, of type UFS3.0: 128 or 256 GB. The 6.65-inch display is an AMOLED HDR FHD+ (2340×1080 pixel resolution) with 19.5:9 ratio and has a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a brightness of up to 430 nits. Audio is DTS:X compliant, while the battery is 5,000 mAh, with 27-watt fast charging. The active liquid cooling system, according to Nubia's claims, allows it to keep the CPU cooler by 16 degrees and make it work at 100% for nine times longer than normal.
This device has customizable triggers, to replace the touch buttons when playing games. The photo department is not one of the strong points of this smartphone, which, after all, was not born to take pictures but to play games: a single 48-megapixel lens (Sony IMX586 sensor) on the rear and a 16 MP on the front. The operating system is stock Android 9, without additional apps of any kind, while the user interface is the Redmagic OS 2.1.
Nubia Red Magic 3s: prices and release date
For the moment, only the Chinese price of the Red Magic 3s is known, which was released in China on September 9 at 2,999 yuan (8/128 GB version) and 3,799 yuan (12/256 GB version). At current exchange rates they make about 384 euros and 487 euros, but prices in Europe will certainly not be these. The previous Red Magic 3 (not "s"), which has lower specifications, is in fact priced for Europe at 479 euros (8/128) and 599 euros (12/256). We have to wait for the launch in Europe, scheduled for October 16, to find out how much the Chinese alternative to the Asus ROG Phone II will cost in our country.
