Nvidia Shield TV 2019: what is it and what’s new

Nvidia Shield TV is the most recommended TV Box for streaming gaming content, but it also acts as a smart TV for TV series, movies and more.

If you're reading this article, you most likely know that the best Android TV Box currently on the market is indeed Nvidia Shield TV. Everyone is buying it because of its many features and unprecedented quality. But what is it actually all about? Why is it worth buying this TV Box over other competitors?

In this article, we'll show you what are the main advantages of this revolutionary device and why you too should have it if you want to access the highest quality video and gaming content.

What is Nvidia Shield TV

Since 2015, Nvidia Shield TV has been the most recommended TV Box for streaming audiovisual content and gaming running Android. It is, basically, an electronic television device that goes to add functionality to a TV (or a monitor in general) not expected in this type of devices. Just connect Nvidia Shield TV to a TV, even an old generation, to turn it into a de facto Smart TV, giving the opportunity to access applications, movies, TV series, streaming music, games and many other content found on the network.

In these 4 years Nvidia Shield TV has had some changes and upgrades, keeping its hardware and software unchanged. Hardware side, this set-top-box always mounts the powerful Tegra X1 processor, which in the last generation has become more performant by about 25% (Tegra X1+). Software side, as we have mentioned, the device operates with Android TV, which is constantly updated.

The novelty of Nvidia Shield TV 2019: the basic and the pro model

The main novelty of this year is the release of two models of Nvidia Shield TV. The basic version is joined by Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Both versions have not only a 25% more powerful processor than previous generations, but they have other specific software-level features that make a difference, such as adding support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies to the 4K format with HDR.

A detail surely appreciated by lovers of TV series is the addition in both models of a physical button on the remote control dedicated to Netflix. Finally, in addition to the presence of the Google Assistant, the new Nvidia Shield TVs are compatible with Alexa, so they can interface with devices from the Amazon Echo line. But what are the differences between these two models of 2019?

Differences between Nvidia Shield Tv and Shield TV Pro

From a design point of view, Nvidia Shield Tv has a tube-shaped body, so you can "hide" the device behind the TV, without being affected by its best features (including Gigabit Ethernet and dual band WIFI). Shield TV Pro, however, resumes the lines of previous models.

With regard to connectivity, Shield TV Pro has two more ports than the base model: the USB 3.0 port and Plex Media Server. In particular, Plex Media Server, also present in the Pro versions of previous models, is an application that allows you to stream media anywhere: this means that you can enjoy the content on Shield TV Pro by passing it from the set-top-box to another device or from another server to the TV Box.

The differences also concern memory. Shield TV features 8 GB of memory with the ability to expand it via microSD. Nvidia Shield TV Pro, on the other hand, increases its storage capacity to 16 GB of internal storage. One last difference between the two variants on the market in 2019 concerns the price. The basic model has a list price of 159.99 euros, while the Pro one has a cost of 219 euros.

Games on Nvidia Shield TV 2019: the titles of the moment

As you probably already know, Shield TV allows you to play games on the big screen, on par with the most famous consoles, such as the PS4 and Xbox One. In addition to the ability to access titles from the Google Play Store library, you can access the one made available by Nvidia Shield TV, called Geforce Now. We recommend a connection of at least 25 Mbps/ 50 Mbps to play the titles on Geforce Now. Inoltre, per poter accedere ai titoli AAA, è molto più comodo avere a disposizione un controller Bluetooth, che si può acquistare a partire dai 69,99 euro.

I titoli su Geforce Now più interessanti e scaricati del momento sono i seguenti:

  • Resident Evil Revelations 2;
  • Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag™;
  • Just Cause™ 3;
  • LEGO® MARVEL’s Avengers;
  • The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt.
