On eBay everything is happening: organized groups with thousands of pre-orders in hand sells PlayStation 5 for thousands of euros, scammers selling photographs and empty boxes and much more.
After the websites of electronics chains knocked out on the day of the launch, after the approved pre-orders resold for thousands of euros, after the influencers who resell the sample received as a gift for testing and after the shootings in parking lots to grab a console without paying for it, now comes the latest madness related to the collective delirium caused by the PlayStation 5. Le truffe più originali, ai limiti dell’incredibile (ma è tutto vero), si stanno vedendo su eBay tanto che la società che gestisce il famoso mercato online aperto a tutti è stata costretta a pubblicare un avvertimento per gli utenti in cerca di una PS5 e ha sguinzagliato i suoi segugi in cerca degli annunci truffaldini, in vista di una rimozione dalla piattaforma che è realmente doverosa da parte di eBay. La truffa in questione, ribattezzata “PS5 photo-scam" sta avvenendo soprattutto sul sito americano di eBay mentre su quello inglese si sta registrando un altro fenomeno allarmante: sembrerebbe esserci una vera e propria banda di sciacalli che ha fatto incetta di non meno di 3.500 preordini di PlayStation 5 con il solo scopo di rivenderli a prezzi altissimi.
PS5 photo-scam: come funziona la truffa
La “PS5 photo-scam" è ciò che vuol dire letteralmente il termine, in inglese: una truffa “fotografica" legata alla PlayStation 5. Potrà sembrare assurdo, ma è proprio così: c’è qualcuno che sta vendendo su eBay le foto della PS5 e sta ricevendo decine di offerte, con prezzi che salgono fino a quasi 10 mila dollari.
La cosa ancora più incredibile è che, tecnicamente, non è neanche una truffa perché nel titolo dell’annuncio è scritto chiaramente che ciò che è in vendita è solo una immagine. Titoli quali “PS5 Console *image only* PlayStation picture“, “PS5 New – Sticker Photo Only!! No Reserve !!!" o anche “PlayStation 5 Sony 2020 PS5 specsCPU: AMD Zen2-based printout picture from cvs“. Or even, hear hear, "EMPTY BOX - NO CONSOLE - PlayStation 5 PS5 - FAST SHIPPING DAMAGED SEE PIC".
The photos have quotes in the thousands, the empty (moreover damaged) PS5 box is selling for $60. And people click.
After eBay published the note in which it announced that it is already removing the scam offers (and the most expensive ones are thankfully already gone) in many of those still present has been added in the description (but not in the title) that this is an ad made to art to catch the bots (ie automated software) launched to make fake bids and raise prices.
PS5: the 3,500 consoles booked in the UK
If people are bidding on eBay to buy a picture of the PS5, without even realizing it, it's because they're terrified they won't be able to get their hands on their object of desire. It's a justifiable fear, because PS5s have ended up in electronics chains, on Amazon and, of course, on Sony's official store.
From the UK comes a plausible reason for the shortage: an organised group of people who pre-ordered 3,500 PlayStations 5 have been discovered, effectively removing them from the market in order to create an imbalance between supply and demand. It is a group that, most likely, is not at all the only one in the world to have implemented this strategy to speculate on the desire of crazy next-gen gamers halfway around the world.
