From January 1, 2020, the rates for the cost of a GB when traveling abroad will be updated: what changes for users
Roaming Zero is the European Union initiative launched a couple of years ago that allows European citizens to travel in EU countries without having to pay additional costs for the monthly SIM subscription. The thresholds available when traveling, however, are not the same as those a user has in Italy. For example, if you pay 10 euros a month to have unlimited minutes, unlimited SMS and 30GB of data traffic, when you travel abroad you will have less gigs available.
Roaming varies depending on how much we pay each month for our monthly subscription and based on the cost of each gigabyte set by the European Union. A formula that is updated from year to year and that you need to know in order to understand how much we can surf the Internet when on vacation. Every year the EU updates the price of a GB, a value that strongly affects the formula. And this will also happen on January 1, 2020, the cost of a giga drops from 4.5 euros to 3.5 euros, allowing users to have a greater amount of data traffic when they are traveling in Europe. How many gigs can we use abroad from January 1, 2020? To answer this question you need to know a simple formula:
Cost of the monthly offer in Italy (VAT Excluded) / 3.5) x 2.
The cost of the offer is the price we pay for the monthly subscription with which we have minutes, SMS and data traffic. 3.5 is the value that the European Union sets from year to year: in 2019 it was 4.5, while for 2020 it will drop to 3.5, thus increasing the amount of gigs that you can use when traveling in Europe. 2, invece, è una costante e non varia con il passare degli anni.
Questa formula vale per tutti gli operatori telefonici che dal 1 gennaio 2020 dovranno adattare le proprie offerte alle nuove direttive dell’Unione Europea. Nella maggior parte dei casi gli operatori hanno aggiornato in anticipo le loro tariffe e già da un paio di settimane si sono adeguati. Nei prossimi giorni dovreste ricevere un SMS con il nuovo tariffario.
Come calcolare i giga a disposizione all’estero
Per semplificare la vita degli utenti, alcuni operatori telefonici hanno messo a disposizione degli utenti una pagina web che calcola in automatico l’ammontare di giga da usare all’estero.
I clienti Vodafone possono accedere alla pagina web dedicata e in basso troveranno il tool che permette di capire quanti GB usare in Europa. Lo stesso vale per i clienti Wind: basta accedere alla pagina web, inserire il costo dell’abbonamento mensile e si avrà il corrispettivo di traffico dati da usare in UE.
Roaming Zero: cosa cambierà nei prossimi anni
La modifica che l’Unione Europea ha stabilito per il 2020 non è l’ultima: il costo dei GB diminuirà anche nei prossimi anni, aumentando in questo modo il numero di giga da poter usare all’estero.
- 2021: 3 euro per GB
- 2022: 2,5 per GB.
