Samsung sembra aver trovato il modo più smart di nascondere la selfie camera frontale senza peggiorare il design e le funzionalità dello smartphone.
Se c’è un settore dell’elettronica di consumo in cui Samsung è molto avanti rispetto alla concorrenza è senza dubbio quello delle fotocamere per smartphone. Di samsung, ad esempio, è l’unico sensore fotografico da 108 MP attualmente in commercio. Di Samsung, probabilmente, sarà la fotocamera del 2021 se l’azienda vorrà trasformare in realtà l’enorme quantità di brevetti appena registrati.
Facendosi un giro sul sito del World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), l’ufficio brevetti internazionali che fa capo alle Nazioni Unite, chiunque può trovare decine di brevetti registrati da Samsung il 24 dicembre. Molti di essi hanno a che fare con gli schermi e con le fotocamere (o i sensori per fotocamera) da smartphone. Schermi e fotocamere fino al 2020 sono stati due componenti separati o, al massimo, “conviventi" grazie all’uso del notch ma a inizio settembre di quest’anno la cinese ZTE ha lanciato sul mercato il primo smartphone con fotocamera sotto lo schermo. A leggere gli ultimi brevetti di Samsung sembrerebbe proprio che l’azienda coreana sia pronta a rispondere con un nuovo tipo di fotocamera sotto lo schermo.
Fotocamera sotto lo schermo: il brevetto Samsung
Tra i tantissimi brevetti registrati da Samsung al WIPO il 24 dicembre ce n’è uno che descrive un nuovo modo di realizzare la “underscreen camera“. La novità non sta tanto nella fotocamera in sé, quanto nel display dello smartphone.
Apparentemente lo smartphone è full screen, senza alcun notch e senza cornici. In realtà ha una piccola area trasparente, dietro la quale c’è un secondo schermo. The user, therefore, sees a single display that stretches uninterrupted across the entire usable surface of the screen.
The second display, however, is movable and can slide down (or in other directions, depending on the design of the smartphone) uncovering the front camera compartment. The patent describes a second rectangular screen with rounded corners and, behind it, a photo compartment with two sensors and an LED flash.
The opening of the second screen can be automated or manual: connecting it to a gesture or directly to the touch of the transparent portion of the screen.
The advantages of this solution
More than an under-screen camera, then, we could talk in this case of an internal pop-up camera. Which, however, does not have the shortcomings of other pop-up cameras: it is not fragile, does not worsen the water resistance of the device, does not let dust and dirt into the smartphone.
The small secondary screen, moreover, can be dedicated to the display of notifications, battery status, network coverage or much more.
When we will see this camera Samsung
In the patent registered by Samsung also refers to the possibility of operating this mechanism via S Pen. Clearly, this patent was born before the decision (moreover, not officially confirmed) to discontinue the Galaxy Note series starting in 2021.
However, the fact that almost certainly the next Samsung Galaxy S21 will be compatible with the stylus leaves speculation that we may actually see this screen on a device for sale in not too long.
The hope of fans of the Korean brand is to see it as early as 2021, but the following year is perhaps a more realistic prediction. Without forgetting, however, that it is by no means certain that this patent will actually be used by Samsung on a mass-produced device. So many patents, in fact, often remain only on paper.
