Presentato ufficialmente il nuovo SoC Qualcomm per gli smartphone top di gamma 2021, ma nella lista dei produttori che lo useranno manca il gigante coreano.

Dopo mesi di indiscrezioni e qualche settimana di benchmark trapelati in rete adesso si scopre che il tanto atteso SoC Qualcomm Snapdragpn 875 non si chiamerà affatto così: durante l’evento online Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital il colosso americano dei chip per il mondo mobile ha rivelato infatti un altro nome: Snapdragon 888.
Una scelta dettata dall’esigenza di rimarcare la discontinuità rispetto alla attuale linea di processori 865, che equipaggiano gli smartphone top di gamma usciti nel 2020. Il nuovo SD 888, secondo Qualcomm, non sarà solo un processore potente ma una piattaforma “Premium" attorno alla quale costruire smartphone evoluti, oltre che veloci. Smartphone 5G, ovviamente, grazie al nuovo modem X60 integrato nel SoC e capace di connettersi a tutto lo spettro delle frequenze 5G: sia le millimetriche che le Sub 6 GHz. Non manca poi un nuovo motore per l’intelligenza artificiale, nuove ottimizzazioni per il gaming e una unità di elaborazione delle foto in grado di “masticare" 120 foto da 12 MP di risoluzione al secondo. Contestualmente alla presentazione del nuovo hardware Qualcomm ha anche annunciato la lista degli 11 produttori che usaranno lo Snapdragon 888 sin dall’inizio. Qualcomm Snapdragon 888: technical specifications
More than performance, which will probably be discussed today during the second day of the Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital, Qualcomm talked mostly about features. And, in particular, 5G: all the latest data optimization technologies are built into the new X60 5G modem and other parts of the SoC, from Fixed Wireless Broadband to Carrier Aggregation to the ability to lock onto both mmWave and sub-6 waves.
The sixth generation of Qualcomm's AI Engine dedicated to artificial intelligence algorithms then promises a significant jump in performance, reaching 26 trillion operations per second (TERA-OPS).
Thanks to the new Adreno GPU, then comes the third generation of Snapdragon Elite Gaming, the set of optimizations dedicated to gaming. The new ISP Qualcomm Spectra, finally, allows you to process photos and videos with a maximum power of 2.7 GigaPixels per second (+35% compared to the performance of the SD 865).
Which smartphones will have SD 888
During the online event, finally, Qualcomm also announced which will be the first smartphone to be equipped with the Snapdragon 888: it will be the Xiaomi Mi 11. Soon after will come devices from Asus, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG (rumors denied, then), Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo and ZTE.
You read it right: in this list there is no Samsung. And this is very strange for two reasons: the first is that, historically, Samsung has always offered on the international market its top of the range devices both in version with Exynos SoC and in Snapdragon version; the second is that it is Samsung, according to the latest news circulated, to produce a good part of the Snapdragon 888 since the production lines of TSMC are practically all dedicated to the new SoC A14 and M1 of Apple (and have already been booked for the future A15). In fact, the Snapdragon 888 is also produced using advanced 5nm technology.
