The best uninterruptible power supplies for pc

A static uninterruptible power supply (also called UPS, from the English Uninterruptible Power Supply) is an equipment used to keep constantly powered in alternating current electrical equipment.

The UPS is an apparatus used primarily in offices that allows you to always have a certain amount of electricity. The latter can be considered as an external battery, since in case of lack of electricity, it allows the electronic equipment to be powered as if they were connected to the classical electrical network.

Why to use the UPS

Data loss due to power failures resulting in sudden shutdown of the equipment, can occur at any time especially due to bad weather conditions related to the presence of violent storms and lightning. The protection of our customers' data or that of an important work project to which a lot of time has been dedicated, is fundamental in order not to lose the fruits of the work done.

The loss of this data, can cause serious economic damage to us, to our company and also to our customers. Knowing that we can count on a system that avoids the dispersion of the data itself makes us stay definitely calmer and allows us to save time and money.

What is an uninterruptible power supply?

Uninterruptible power supplies or ups, are therefore devices capable of mitigating possible surges or spikes in voltage resulting from the supply of electricity. Uninterruptible power supplies are useful, for example, in case of voltage drops while you are working on the PC because these devices are able to power, for a certain period of time, the electrical equipment connected to them.

So, if while you are working on the computer there is a blackout and we did not have time to save the data of the work done, keeping the computer on will allow us to save our work before the complete shutdown of the device.

How does an uninterruptible power supply work?

Uninterruptible power supplies are divided into two categories: "on line" and "off line". The first ones take away the disturbances produced by the electric network through the double conversion but have a higher consumption than the off line ones. The rectifier and the inverter, in these models, are always active and, in case of black out, the inverter feeds itself with the energy of the batteries leading it to the connected device.

The off line UPS instead, deliver energy only few milliseconds after the black out.

Come calcolare i watt necessari

  • calcolare i watt dell’alimentatore del tuo computer prestando molta attenzione al suo tipo di PFC e ricordandosi di comprare UPS con più watt rispetto a quelli dell’alimentatore. Questo perché il consumo in watt dell’alimentatore scelto varia in base alla tipologia e al numero di componenti presenti all’interno del PC;
  • quantificare i watt degli altri apparecchi elettronici che si intendono proteggere, applicando la formula per ricavare la potenza apparente;

This value, however, refers to the minutes that will be had using the power supplied by the UPS at 100%. If not otherwise specified, the autonomy refers to 75% of the total power output that the UPS can guarantee, since, usually, a UPS is never sized to work at 100%, but at most at 75/80% of the total applicable load.

Noise:

Another factor that influences the choice of the UPS is the noise. The activity of the inverter can produce more or less annoying noise, similar to the slight hum generated by the operation of fans that keep temperatures down.

  • UPS Offline;
  • UPS Line Interactive, o interattivo;
  • UPS Online a doppia conversione.

The main difference between these devices and standby UPS is the presence of a voltage stabilization circuit when the voltage drops below the mains level by more than 20%. This system is called AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) and has the task of stabilizing voltage variations within a range of + / - 3%.

Online double conversion UPS

These are the uninterruptible power supplies most commonly used in critical applications, where the safety of connected equipment must be guaranteed in an optimal way. Their main feature is the separation between the input and output power supply that allows to avoid network disturbances in the vast majority of possible cases.

Another feature of these UPS is their ability to generate the voltage independently so the possible current fluctuations do not affect the operation of the systems because the energy comes directly from the internal battery of the UPS.

Connection of the UPS to PC and other devices:

When purchasing the UPS particular attention should be paid to the type of socket. Most UPSs are equipped with IEC sockets while other models have normal Shucko sockets. Opting for one or the other solution depends on what you need to connect to the UPS. In case of wrong purchase, you can buy a multisocket, alternatively an adapter.

Additional functions of the UPS

If you need to manage the functionality of the UPS for statistics or operating parameters, you have to install a specific software usually present in the product box. After connecting the UPS to the PC via serial cable, USB cable or Ethernet cable, it will be possible to automatically manage different functions depending on the UPS model available.

The main functions are: shutdown of the computer in case of a power failure, displaying the battery charge status and the input and output voltage, managing the operating range of the AVR and performing diagnostic tests.

Use and maintenance of the UPS:

To keep the UPS efficient and reliable it is necessary to replace the battery every 2 or 3 years. Its wear and tear depends on its quality and use.

  • caricare l’UPS almeno 8-10 ore prima di provarlo;
  • non applicare carichi eccessivi;
  • evitare di far scaricare completamente le batterie;

Cosa ricordare prima dell’acquisto

  • optare per UPS dotati di alcuni watt in più rispetto a quelli realmente necessari, per essere già predisposti per possibili futuri aumenti di dispositivi connessi;
  • prestare attenzione alla tipologia di ingressi presenti sul retro dell’UPS;
