Touch ID won’t be back on an iPhone before this date

The first rumors about the 2022 iPhone 14 have already arrived, well in advance. Touch ID is coming, an old acquaintance much awaited by fans

There will be no fingerprint reader on iPhones before iPhone 14, the range that will debut in 2022. The last series of iPhones to feature Touch ID was 2017's iPhone 8, after which, if you make an exception for the "cheap" 2020 iPhone SE, Apple has focused solely on secure face unlocking, which the folks in Cupertino call Face ID.

A solution that Face ID effective and secure, but in a period of pandemic and mandatory masks almost everywhere has shown its limitations, and many, including some of those who have appreciated from the beginning, have ended up regretting the "old" unlock through fingerprints, which at least would not come into conflict with the masks. Many would have preferred to have a secure unlocking system as an alternative to Face ID which is precisely the Touch ID, so as not to be forced to unlock the iPhone by entering the six-digit numerical code every time you wear the mask. Apple has so far turned a deaf ear, and according to the latest rumors suggest that there will be no alternative unlocking to Face ID before 2022.

Touch ID on iPhone, appointment to 2022

Spokesperson for the rumor is Ming-Chi Kuo, according to which, in fact, the Touch ID under the screen should debut with the iPhone 14. The well-known analyst has not been able to indicate which models of the range will have Touch ID, whether all or only a part, but the idea is that the dual authentication system will be part of the features of the iPhone Pro.

It is thought that Apple wants to keep the production costs of the iPhone "cheap" as low as possible to not let the prices jump too high, which would happen if the unlocking systems were two, Face ID and Touch ID. So in all likelihood only iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will allow you to choose the method to unlock the smartphone.

However, it seems really rash to bet on one or the other hypothesis, especially in light of the fact that the iPhone 14 will arrive in 2022, which is almost a year and a half. It's true that technology travels at a rapid pace and manufacturers like Apple are well ahead with the design work of the most important models, but in a relatively large period of time as that which separates us from the iPhone 14 everything can change.

The iPhone mini destined to become maxi

Kuo also added that iPhone 13 will also have a mini variant, the same of which a couple of days ago was said to be the opposite. According to the analyst, the last "mini iPhone" so it will be the 13, then in 2022 Apple will go in the opposite direction with a (relatively) cheap extra-large iPhone with a 6.7-inch display.

He also drew a guess on the price within which Apple would like to keep, namely the $900 threshold in the U.S. to comply with which this 6.7-inch iPhone 14 will give up a number of features, such as the dual unlock system. In addition, Kuo thinks iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have totally revamped 48-megapixel main cameras. But there's still plenty of time to find out Apple's real intentions.
