Virtual reality, YouTube VR lands on Oculus GO and Samsung Gear

YouTube's virtual reality platform after launching on Daydream View, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR is now also compatible with Oculus Go and Samsung Gear

YouTube is betting more and more on virtual reality. The famous platform for videos from Google has just landed on Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR visors with the new YouTube VR platform. A move that, in Google's plans, should allow it to secure an advantageous position in the virtual reality entertainment sector.

YouTube - and therefore Google - can already count on a solid audience base thanks to the many VR visors compatible with smartphones, which gives access to 360-degree videos through the screen of both Android and iOS devices. YouTube's landing on Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR with a dedicated app (YouTube VR) will therefore allow users to watch music videos, tutorials and any content published on Google's platform in both 180 degrees and 360 degrees. Needless to say, to be able to see videos in this mode the authors will have to have made movies suitable for this technology. Not all YouTube videos are playable in VR.

How YouTube VR works

YouTube VR is very easy to use. Once downloaded, just log in with your classic YouTube credentials and you're done. We won't have to do anything else. The interface and functions are identical to those of "normal" YouTube. So we'll have our favorites, our search history and the channels we follow. It should be said that the YouTube VR app is not an absolute novelty. Mountain View had already presented it last July 2018, but for months it was only usable on some top-of-the-line viewers or gaming consoles such as Daydream View, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. Now, however, the list of compatible devices has expanded to two cheaper models such as Oculus Go and Samsung Gear. The YouTube application is totally free on all the viewers on which it is compatible. At the moment there are about 800 thousand videos on the platform divided by genre and categories. In short, if we have one of the VR visors mentioned we just have to go to our Store download the program and start making virtual reality experiences with YouTube as well.
