WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram down: what’s going on [UPDATED: Official statements]

UPDATE: PROBLEMS SOLVED - In the Italian night, at about 3:40 am, WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announces on Twitter that the service has been completely restored. Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are also back online, both from the Web and from the app. The down of Facebook services is officially over.

UPDATE 9:30 PM - No news, bad news: the technical problems of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger continue without the slightest sign of improvement, anywhere in the world, for over 4 hours. This is one of the longest downs in the history of the Facebook group, certainly the most comprehensive since all platforms are affected by the technical problems.

This is not normal: it is very rare that such problems are extended to the whole world and affect all the services of a group, for such a long period of time. Especially if the group is Facebook, which certainly doesn't skimp on IT security and service stability. Tomorrow morning there will be a lot of explaining to do for Facebook, but it's unlikely we'll get any answers beyond the usual ones.

No improvement, at least for now, for any of the platforms affected by the down.

Update 8:15 PM - The evening proceeds worse than the afternoon: with Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram down millions of users are pouring into other platforms, looking for a communication tool still working. While Twitter is laughing, however, Telegram is limping: the app is slow, the Web version even more so.

The load of new users connecting is so high that, on Twitter, from the official Telegram account they let know: "There are *many* users signing up today from other platforms that are not available. Wizards are working their weird magic on the servers to try to keep everything running, but Telegram might be a little slow. Sorry!"

No improvement, at least for now, for any of the platforms affected by the down.

Update 8:00 PM - While the situation is not improving on any front, with Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp down since about 5:15 PM, on Twitter starts to circulate the mockery of the official Twitter account that, seeing a return on the platform of millions of sporadic users, spasmodically looking for news on Facebook apps, not without a hint of malice tweets: "Hi everyone, literally".

No improvement, at least for now, for any of the platforms affected by the down.

Update 7:30 PM - After the official apologies on all Facebook Twitter accounts, Messenger Instagram and WhatsApp, after almost two and a half hours of down of all platforms of Mark Zuckerberg's group, the situation does not improve one iota: everything blocked.

In the meantime, on Twitter, the hashtags #FacebookDown, #WhatsAppDown and #InstagramDown are going through the roof: tweets with the first two, at 7:30 p.m., are close to half a million in Italy alone.

No improvement, at least for now, for any of the platforms affected by the down.

Update 7:00 p.m. - They continue, on all fronts, the inefficiencies to the platforms of the Facebook group: WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook do not work from 17:15 today, Monday, October 4, 2021. Meanwhile, however, came the first official statements.

Facebook, on Twitter, said: "We are aware that some people are experiencing problems accessing our apps and products. We're working to get things back to normal as soon as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience."

WhatsApp, also on Twitter, says: "We're aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp right now. We're working to get things back to normal and will post an update here as soon as possible."

Instagram, still on Twitter, posts a message that's different in style but identical in substance: "Instagram and its friends are going through a bit of a rough patch right now and you may be having trouble using them. Bear with us, we're here! #instagramdown"

No improvement, at least for now, for any of the platforms affected by the down.

Original article: October 4, 6:00 pm

There seem to be major problems with the servers of the Facebook group, today, October 4, 2021: starting at 5:15 pm Italian time, in fact, both WhatsApp and Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are KO. Impossible to access the services, with thousands and thousands of reports of inefficiency by users.

From the reports recorded by the site Downdetector it would seem that the down of the three services is generalized internationally, with peaks of reports in Italy, Germany, UK and Mexico, but the reports also come from many other parts of the world. So, it's easy to think that it's a big technical problem for the entire infrastructure of the Facebook group, even if the company has not yet issued any press release, neither on its website nor on Twitter (practically the last social blog left standing, besides TikTok). Here's what's going on, from Web and mobile.

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram down

In detail, still at 17:50, the Facebook Web sites, the Facebook press site, the WhatsApp Web platform and the Instagram site are unreachable. Web side, therefore, the whole group is completely KO.

Mobile side, instead, the WhatsApp app opens but does not send or receive messages. The Facebook one opens but doesn't update the feed, comments or let you read the news. It's also impossible to post anything. The same goes for the Instagram app. The Messenger app shows identical problems to the WhatsApp one, identical speech for Instagram Direct.

Today, October 4, 2021, the whole Facebook universe is completely shut down. We will update you on further developments.
