How much value does a smartphone lose one to two years after release? SellCell's survey offers an interesting insight into top-of-the-line smartphones
When buying a new smartphone, several factors are taken into account: the technical features, the screen size, the number of cameras, the operating system and, logically, the price. An important factor that many people underestimate is the depreciation of the device over time. If after two-three years after purchase we decide to sell the smartphone, we need to evaluate the right selling price. And there are some models and brands that maintain a higher price even after a couple of years after purchase.
The U.S. site SellCell conducted research on smartphones released on the market during 2018. Which model maintained the highest price? Which, on the other hand, depreciated the most? I risultati evidenziano alcuni aspetti molto interessanti, come ad esempio il maggior valore dei dispositivi iOS rispetto a quelli Android. Dopo un anno, un iPhone perde solo il 50% del suo valore, in confronto al 65-80% di un dispositivo Android (la percentuale varia a seconda del modello e della marca).
La ricerca è stata effettuata sul mercato statunitense, ma può essere traslata perfettamente anche su quello europeo e italiano. La variazione dei prezzi degli smartphone è molto simile in tutte le Nazioni, soprattutto quando si tratta di modelli top di gamma.
Quale smartphone si deprezza di meno dopo un anno
L’inchiesta portata avanti da SellCell ha analizzato l’andamento del prezzo di alcuni modelli top di gamma delle aziende più importanti al mondo: Apple, Samsung, Google, Sony e LG. I modelli presi in esami sono:

Partiamo da Apple. L’analisi ha preso in esame i sei modelli lanciati tra il 2017 e il 2018, calcolando la percentuale di deprezzamento dalla data di lancio a ottobre 2019. Il prezzo calcolato a ottobre 2019 è sui modelli in ottimo stato e che possono essere venuti sul mercato dell’usato. Mediamente uno smartphone Apple perde tra il 47 e il 64% del suo valore. Ad esempio l’iPhone XS Max, lanciato a un prezzo di 1099 dollari, può essere rivenduto a 580 dollari, con una svalutazione del 47,2%.
Discorso molto diverso per quanto riguarda gli smartphone Android. The Galaxy S9, launched in March 2018 at $719, can be found on the used market for $195, a depreciation of 72.9%. Very similar percentage for the Note 9: launch price $1000, price as of October 2019 $321 (depreciation at 67.9%). The music doesn't change for other Android smartphones: the Google Pixel 3 weighed 70% of its value, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium and Sony Xperia XZ2 as much as 86%, and the LG V40 ThinQ and LG G7 ThinQ nearly 80%.
