Why Google Pixel 6 will take great photos

Attended several hardware innovations on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro: in particular for the camera, which would come from Samsung factories.

If there is one aspect on which Google's smartphones, the Pixel, have always had very few rivals, that is photography. Since the first generation, the Google Pixel of each price range have proved capable of holding their own against the best competition if not doing better on many occasions, and the tradition will continue with the next Pixel 6, which will be as good "cameraphone" as its predecessors.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, it is now clear, will be two powerful products, perhaps the most powerful that the company has ever made. The intention is to "fly" to the Olympus of the best Android smartphones - something that Google had already succeeded in the past for example with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 - but with the products that will be presented in two months or so, the company wants to push a lot on marketing to send up the sales that have never shone, if you make an exception for the Pixel series "a" that have won more than someone with their excellent value for money. The photographic compartment, it is now clear to everyone, is a feature that attracts many potential buyers: Google knows this and has acted accordingly.

The next smartphones of the big G will not cost little but will offer a lot, especially in terms of photo quality, probably the only strength that the Pixel have kept unchanged over the years turning it into a real manifesto.

The revolution that Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will bring to market through a chip designed in house will also have effects on the type of main camera used. The fourth developer version of Android 12 that was released in recent hours has made it clear, through the latest version of Google Camera, how Google may have changed supplier for the camera of the next smartphones.

In recent years in Mountain View had turned to the leaders of Sony, but apparently for the next generation of Pixel Google would turn to Samsung, which has a high-end camera that would suit the two Pixel.

His name is ISOCELL GM1, it was made official in May last year and its highlight is a last-generation autofocus borrowed from the DSLR camera segment, namely the professional ones: it is the dual-pixel autofocus, which offers far better performance than the traditional phase detection autofocus.

50 megapixels and very fast modem

Samsung's product is therefore quite advanced and also quite defined (50 megapixels), so its features allow it to remain current despite the fact that last February the second generation ISOCELL GN2 was presented. It would not be the first time that Google chooses to integrate on its Pixel a camera not too recent.

It has already happened, for example, that Big G chose a sensor and repropose it in the next generations of its smartphones: Google Pixel 3 for example has relied on a Sony IMX363, the same as Pixel 4 and Pixel 5. But this year it would be time for a change.

By the same method it has been learned that the Pixel 6 could use a variant of Samsung's Exynos 5123 5G modem: this is a component capable of reaching important speeds, up to 7.35 Gbps on mmWave 5G networks and up to 5.1 Gbps on sub-6 GHz 5G networks. If this is confirmed, among other things, would also be confirmed the hypothesis that Tensor, the new chip made in Google Pixel 6, is nothing more than a customized version of the SoC Samsung Exynos 2100.
