The Chinese giant Xiaomi enters the market of dongles to make smart the normal TV. A market that already sees present products such as the Google Chromecast and the Amazon Fire TV Stick, as well as many others. The new Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is already on sale and has a good price/features ratio. In fact, it costs 39.99 euros, as much as the Amazon Fire TV Stick and 99 cents more than the Google Chromecast.
Xiaomi has made some very precise choices, not to distort its nature as a manufacturer of good quality hardware and great price. That's why the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick's data sheet isn't mind-blowing, but simply sufficient for the job the device has to do: connect a normal TV to the Internet, run decent apps and display video streams at 1080p resolution, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. What is surprising, in the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick dongle, are instead the very small size of the device and the quality and design of the remote control: very simple, but functional.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick: technical features
The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is very small and light: 92.4×30.2×15.2 millimeters and 28.5 grams in weight (excluding remote control). Inside is a 2.0 GHz Amlogic S805Y CPU, a quad-core with four Cortex-A53 units and a Mali-450 GPU. RAM is just one GB, while storage is 8 GB and in eMMC technology. There is support for Dolby Audio and DTS Surround Sound for sound, while available connections are Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, an HDMI 2.0a port and a microUSB. As mentioned above, video output is at 1080p for 60 fps. The operating system is Android TV, but not in the latest version 10.0, but in version 9.0. It is very likely that it will be updated soon.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick: the remote
The remote control of the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick, which connects via Bluetooth, is very classic and simple in design: at the top center is the power button, just below that of Google Assistant. Further down we find the pad and the button to move and click within the Android TV interface. Below that are three more buttons for navigating the menus, two buttons dedicated to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and, finally, the two volume buttons. The remote control is made of hard plastic and black in color, just like the stick.
