What is the EDGE network? All info about the mobile phone system

EDGE stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution" and is one of the world's established mobile phone standards. The standard enables the transfer of data using a smartphone or tablet. Get an overview of the cellular standard and learn more about other current standards.

EDGE: What you need to know about the mobile communications system

The EDGE mobile communications system was introduced in Germany in 2006 and is considered an intermediate stage of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). In particular, rural regions where there is insufficient UMTS coverage, thus receive mobile Internet thanks to EDGE.
  • Through EDGE, data can be transmitted at speeds of 150 up to 220 Kbit/s.
  • Like GPRS, EDGE uses the GSM network for the transmission of data.
  • Thanks to a new and better modulation method, however, higher data transmission speeds than the maximum possible 55 Kbit/s of GPRS can be achieved.
  • The higher speed allows the exchange of larger content over the mobile network.

LTE or 4G: That can the current standard

With the current standard LTE (Long Term Evolution), data rates of up to 100 Mbit/s are possible. Depending on where you live, you can even surf faster via LTE than via a DSL connection. The LTE network has been expanded in Germany since 2011 and is to be extended or replaced in the future by the new and even faster 5G network. With 5G, transmission speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second are possible.
