Open a PPS file - with these programs it works

A PPS file is a file that was created with PowerPoint. However, in order to open such a PPS file, it is not mandatory that you have the paid Office suite installed on your computer. You can find out which alternative programs are suitable for opening it instead here.

How to open PPS files

PPS files are files that are created and opened using PowerPoint. If you have not created the PPS file yourself and therefore do not have PowerPoint on your PC, but you can open the file with other programs. Free of charge, this is possible with the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer, which also supports other formats, such as PPT or POT. However, you can only view PPS files with the PowerPoint Viewer, but not edit them yourself.

How to edit PPS files after opening them

If it is necessary not only to open and view a PPS file, but also to edit it, you will need an alternative program for this purpose. Simply download the free program Open Office.

1. Have you installed Open Office on your PC or laptop, you still need to set the program as the default for opening PPS files.
2. To do this, search for an existing PPS file and click on it with the right mouse button.
3. Thereupon a context menu opens, in which you please go to "Open with" > "Browse" and select Open Office as the default program.
4. Have you made the change successfully, you can open PPS files in the future simply by double-clicking in Open Office.
