PayPal: Payment open - what's behind the status

If you offer PayPal as a payment method as a seller, then there are some points to consider. Especially when you first become a seller, it may happen that money that has been sent to you receives the status open. However, you will not have access to the amount yet.

This is what it means when a payment is open with PayPal

If you as a seller offer PayPal as a payment method, you should already inform yourself about the exact procedure beforehand. Especially with new sellers, it can happen that the money you get sent via PayPal is not available at first. In this case, the status of the payment is "open". This is earmarked funds that you do not have yet. Usually, the payment is released after 21 calendar days. That a payment is considered "open" can have several reasons.
  1. You have opened a new account with PayPal and have not yet sold any or few goods. It may be necessary to first build a good reputation as a seller.
  2. If your sales activity has slowed down for a long time, this may also be a reason.
  3. If you have problems with several customers or refunds have been requested from you more often, you have lost your good reputation. This also leads to the temporary withholding of payment.
  4. Has your sales behavior changed, so you have an unexpected increase in sales or changed your type of business? Then the status will show up as well.
  5. Do you sell items with a higher risk, this includes event tickets, travel packages, vouchers or similar, then this can also lead to an "open" status.
