In the shadow of giants Netflix and Amazon, alternative streaming services are thriving amazingly well. Among them is Means TV, a U.S. service that is gaining notoriety in Germany.

Consciously far left: Means TV is post-capitalist in orientation.

The approach of Means TV shows how strongly political engagement has penetrated all areas.

Means TV: All power to the workers?

Means TV falls at first glance into the category of small indie streaming services. However, Means TV is based on a clear political statement: for example, the service describes itself as the first post-capitalist streaming provider. This also influences the content focus:

• These are intended to form a thematic antithesis to the glossy productions, such as those that are often common in Hollywood.
• The focus at Means TV is on the stories and fates of the working class.
• The company structure is based on socialist principles: Thus, the profits are distributed to the employees who run the service or contribute to it.
• This is done in the form of a firmly defined structure, as explained here under the term "Cooporative Structure".
• Fittingly, the employees also form the board of directors.
• To remain independent, the service does completely without advertising and sponsors.
• The interface with politics is even directly present at Means TV: Thus, the two minds behind the service were responsible in 2018 for an election commercial of the left-wing Democratic politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The further growth plans are to proceed according to the grassroots principle. Despite its anti-capitalist stance, Means TV is not free: Users pay $10 a month or a one-time $110 annual model.
