What is Patreon and how does it work?

The way Patreon works reads as follows:

• Patreon relies entirely on voluntary donations. The prerequisite for this is an account page on which financial support is requested.
• In this way, for example, content creators such as bloggers, YouTubers or other creators try to get paid for their work. Addressed are fans who can thereby become supporters.
• A well-known example is the indie hit Dwarf Fortress, whose developers were able to raise money via Patreon.
• Also for one-time, time-limited fundraising campaigns Patreon is used.
• The amount of donations can be freely determined. Usually there are several levels that offer donors various benefits.

For account holders who want to earn money through Patreon, the service is not entirely free. The platform can be paid by commission, that is, proportionately to the donations - in total, this is still a profit business for the participants and allows the continuation of the service.
