Disable GIF images - how to do it

If you find the animated GIF images that are displayed on many websites annoying, it helps to disable them. Depending on which browser you use, this works via its settings or through an add-on. We will show you the right way to disable them.

How to disable the display of GIF images in the browser

In social media like Facebook, but also on many other websites, GIFs are used more and more. If the small, animated images bother you, however, it is possible to disable them without any problems. The procedure required for deactivation varies depending on which browser you use.
  1. If you use the Firefox browser, first enter the command "about:config" in the address bar.
  2. On the page that opens, then search for the term "animation", click on the search result "image.animation_modes" and change the settings to "none" before confirming the change with "OK".
  3. In Internet Explorer, the disabling of GIF images is possible by clicking on the "gear icon" and go to "Internet Options" > "Advanced" > "Multimedia".
  4. Uncheck there next to the entry "Play animations in web pages" and confirm with "OK".

Disable GIF images: Special case Google Chrome

Unlike Firefox and Internet Explorer, Chrome does not have a built-in way to disable GIF images. To stop their display anyway, only the installation of an add-on like "Stop Gif" helps. To do this, first download the add-on from "chrome.google.com/webstore" and add it to the browser by clicking "Add". If a GIF image is now displayed to you, simply press the "Esc" key to stop a displayed GIF animation.
