Excel: Display negative times - here's how

By default, Excel does not display times in a comprehensive format. In order to be able to display negative times, you must first make some settings for this purpose. After just a few steps, you can display negative times and even calculate with them.

Negative times in Excel: here's how to display them correctly

In some situations, you may want to calculate with times where a negative time would be the result. By default, however, Excel cannot display these times.

1. Start Excel and navigate to the "Options" in the "File" tab.
2. Now you can select the "Advanced" category on the left and then scroll until you reach the "When calculating this workbook" entry.
3. Now click in the box "Use 1904 date values" so that Excel can now also display negative times.
4. Finally, you still need to confirm your changes by clicking "OK".

Excel: Mit negativen Zeiten rechnen – so klappt es

1. Markieren Sie zunächst alle Zellen, in denen Zeiten eingetragen sind und mit denen gerechnet werden soll.
2. Nun wechseln Sie durch einen Rechtsklick in das Kontextmenü und wählen die Option „Zellen formatieren“.
3. Wechseln Sie in die Kategorie „Benutzerdefiniert“ und geben Sie bei „Typ“ den Wert [[h]:mm:ss] ein.
4. Abschließend müssen Sie erneut durch „OK“ bestätigen und können nun korrekt mit negativen Zeiten rechnen.
