Finding the right wine - how to become a connoisseur

If you love to cook and invite friends over for dinner, the right wine will round out your compositions perfectly. If you rarely drink wine yourself, choosing it in stores can present you with challenges.

Finding the right wine: Orient me to four directions

To make choosing the right wine easier, you can orient yourself to four styles.
  1. Velvet and smooth: You'll like these wines if you like ripe and sweet fruits, such as cherries and plums. You should also lean towards Gouda, Edam and cream cheese rather than a strong mountain cheese. Give a Dornfelder, Primitivo or Pinot Noir a chance.
  2. Harmonious and mild: Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Silvaner will taste good if you like to eat tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple and if you prefer to tender and young cheeses and white meat.
  3. Strong and strong: Do you like to reach for mountain cheese, Parmesan and Camembert, then you will enjoy a strong wine. Even if you prefer fresh and tart fruits such as apples and citrus, prefer this style of wine. Try, for example, Merlot, Tempranillo or Carbarnet Sauvignon.
  4. Fruity and fresh: you prefer citrus fruits as well as mild cheeses? Then you should try a Riesling, GrĂ¼ner Veltiner or a Pinot Gris.

Match the wine to the food

As a rule of thumb, you should note that ice wines go very well with a dessert. For light meat, vegetarian dishes and fish you should rather reach for a white wine. Dark meat and game you prefer to combine with a heavy red wine.
