Right wine temperature - it ensures optimal taste
Everyone has heard that white wine is drunk cold and red wine warm. Actually, it's quite simple: the lighter a wine, the cooler it needs to be. Heavy wine, on the other hand, is drunk warmer. The heaviness here means the fullness that the wine creates in the mouth.
Drinking temperatures for white and red wine
The temperature of a wine is important to bring out the flavor of each variety. For this reason, you should pay particular attention to it during storage. While white wines prefer the cooler temperatures, you need higher degrees for red wines to develop the aroma.- 8 to 10 degrees: young and light white wines - grape varieties such as Pino Grigio, Grüner Veltiner or Riesling belong to this category. Sparkling wine is also drunk at this temperature. To achieve such a temperature, put the bottle in the refrigerator for about 3 to 5 hours.
- 12 to 14 degrees: strong white wines - the best known here is the Chardonnay. Rosé wines are made from red grapes, but are processed like a white. Therefore, a drinking temperature of 12 to 14 degrees also applies to rosé. For this temperature, the bottle should be in the refrigerator for about 2 to 3 hours.
- 14 degrees: light red wines - this group includes Merlot or Valpolicella. To reach 14 degrees, leave these red wines for 2 hours in the refrigerator and then leave them outside a bit.
- 16 to 18 degrees: Strong red wines - Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti or Bordeaux wines like this temperature best. Only briefly put in the refrigerator or even better: store in a cool room.
