PC: Connect case fan - how to do it

By connecting a case fan to your PC, you can regulate and lower its temperature. Depending on the fan model you use, the procedure to connect fan and PC is different. We'll show you what to consider.

How to properly connect a case fan

In order to achieve better heat dissipation and cool your computer, it is possible to connect an additional case fan. How you connect a case fan to your PC depends on the type of connector the fan has. If the case fan has a small connector with three pins, connect it directly to the mainboard under "CHA_FAN1". A modern PWM fan with four pins on the connector is also connected directly to the mainboard. If, on the other hand, a wider Molex connector is installed on the case fan, its connection is only possible by connecting it to the power supply.

How to control your PC's case fan

If you have a 3-pin fan or a 4-pin fan connected to your PC, the fan, the cooling of the PC and the transfer of additional data are usually controlled automatically. To set the control yourself instead, use an additional program.
  1. A program suitable for this purpose is "SpeedFan". This is available for download free of charge on the Internet and supports the control of more than 200 different motherboards.
  2. Have you successfully installed the tool on your PC, set its language first under "Configure" > "Options" to "German".
  3. Followed by this, you can view the current temperature, the load and the speed of the fan in the tab "Readings" and make your own changes in the configuration.
