PC: Fan connection - tips and tricks

A PC consists of numerous parts that, by working together, form a functioning device. If you want to expand or replace the hardware, it is important to know the connections of the individual parts, as they are not always consistent. There are also different connections for the fans inside your computer.

This is what you need to know about the connections of the fans in your PC

A fan is needed to cool the different parts of your PC. There are usually few to no four-pin connectors on the motherboard, but instead there are some three-pin connectors that are suitable for the fans, for example.
  1. Most fans these days have a connector with three pins.
  2. Two of the pins are used for power. The third pin is needed for the speed of the fan.
  3. There are now also 4-pin fans. These are usually used for cooling the processor. The fourth line is used to control the speed or PMW.
  4. Fans that have only two pins are usually no longer used in computers. Here, the first pin served for the ground and the second pin for the supply voltage.
  5. On the basis of the color of the pins, you can see which is used for the various purposes. Here, pin 1 is black, the second pin is red, the third pin is yellow and the fourth pin is blue. Diese Farbkennzeichnung gilt vor allem bei neueren Modellen und kann bei älteren Lüftern anders belegt sein.
