Confluence: Create table of contents

Confluence is a software developed by the Atlassian company, primarily used as an enterprise wiki. By creating a table of contents on Confluence, users can get a page overview and navigate to the post. You can learn how to create a table of contents on Confluence here.

How to go about creating a Confluence table of contents

For a clear table of contents, text formatting with headings 1 through 6 is necessary. These are basically similar to the headings H1 to H6 in HTML format.
  1. Inserting the table of contents: after formatting all headings, add the table of contents in the editor by clicking on the "plus symbol" in the navigation bar. Now select "Contents", whereupon the configuration window opens.
  2. Configuration: In this section you make all the necessary settings, which you can keep an eye on via the "Preview" button. Once all configurations are completed, click "Insert".

Important configurations when creating a Confluence table of contents

As with the creation of a Confluence Anchor, you also have different configuration options for the table of contents:
  • Output type: Used to specify the bullet display.
  • Section numbering: Check here to perform the numbering of the headings.
  • Separator: Here you can set the symbol to separate entries.
  • Overline indent: With this function you set the indent of the respective list items.
