LaTeX: Writing umlauts - use the possibilities

Particularly if you want to create texts that are written in different languages, you won't get anywhere with the standardized program of LaTeX. However, the word processor offers you a way to work with different umlauts.

How to write umlauts

Standardized LaTeX does not offer you a possibility to work with umlauts. Due to this, you need to work with an imported package to display umlauts.
  1. To begin, you need to add the inputenc package to your document. To do this, you must enter the command /usepackage(utf8)(inputence).
  2. The code component utf8 describes all umlauts that are most widely used. This includes all umlauts that you use for the German language.
  3. If you do not want to import the package, then you can represent all letters as umlaut.
  4. For this, use the formula /'x', where x stands for the letter that you want to represent as umlaut.
  5. By writing the umlauts indirectly, you have the possibility that you also represent umlauts that are not included in the inputenc package.
  6. This also allows you to work with other languages.

Why should you install the package at all?

The more commands you use within the writing flow, the more complex a text becomes. Due to this, the writing flow can be hindered and you can't write down your thoughts in such a coordinated way. Especially if you have just started working with LaTeX, you should mark the places where you want to put the commands and insert all commands later.
