LaTeX: Writing in italics - how to put your text in focus

One way to emphasize components of your text in a stylish way is to write sentences or single words in italics. This way, you can draw the reader's eye to essential aspects without interfering with the flow of reading.

How to write in italics

Whether you want to highlight a quote or draw focus to individual sections of text: If you write components in italics, the reader's eye is automatically drawn to them.
  1. To write a word or text in italics in Latex, you must enter the command /textit("text").
  2. If you want to write a longer text in italics, you must also put it in the brackets after the command.
  3. It is important that you do not put any spaces between the text and the beginning and the end of the bracket. Because otherwise LaTeX can not execute the command.
  4. If you want to italicize a complete section of text, you should use the command /begin(itshape) and /end(itshape).
  5. Between the two commands now put all the text you want LaTeX to italicize.
  6. If you want to generate additional attention, you should use the command /textbf(/textit(bold italic)). This will also make the word bold at the same time.

Balance matters

If you are writing a text by using a large number of quotes, you should make a selection so that only the essential quotes are italicized. If you were to italicize all areas, you forfeit the opportunity to generate attention.
