What does DAB mean? What's behind the letters

DAB is the name "Digital Audio Broadcasting". This designation was used from 1999 to 2001. It was then renamed "digital radio". In the meantime, the method for digital transmission of radio signals has been replaced by its successor, DAB+. This makes it possible to receive radio stations in the car, for example, without interference.

What does the abbreviation DAB

The abbreviation DAB appears especially when buying a radio. This is a method by which radio signals are transmitted digitally. For this reason, the term "digital radio" is used more often nowadays. In the meantime, the procedure has been replaced by its successor DAB+.
  1. DAB means in detail "Digital Audio Broadcasting".
  2. With the procedure, it is possible to receive a radio signal almost without interference, even with weak signals. This is precisely why it is often used in car radios.
  3. With DAB+, the signal is sent from a transmission tower via an antenna to your receiver device. For this reason, it is also called digital terrestrial radio. An existing Internet connection is therefore not necessary.
  4. You can receive the various digital radio stations free of charge, provided you have the appropriate radio device.
  5. In contrast to the widespread FM, where all frequencies are already occupied, there are still numerous possibilities with DAB+ to broadcast new programs.
  6. All signals are also sent over one channel, so you do not have to extra "readjust" to receive a corresponding station.
