Bluetooth Speakers vs Sonos - Differences

Both Bluetooth and Sonos speakers allow you to listen to audio content wirelessly. Although the two types of devices are very similar, there are still some basic differences, such as the connection standard or mobility. Get an overview of the most serious differences.

What is the difference between Bluetooth speakers and Sonos?

Unlike conventional Bluetooth speakers, Sonos devices do not rely on a Bluetooth connection, but connect to other devices via WLAN. The WLAN connection offers some advantages that are not available via Bluetooth.
  • When connecting via Bluetooth, the two paired devices must always be close to each other so that the connection is not interrupted. The range of Sonos speakers, on the other hand, is much greater, because the connection is made via WLAN instead of Bluetooth.
  • In addition to the greater range, the connection via WLAN is also far less susceptible to interference than a Bluetooth connection.
  • About the network, you have the option to connect several Sonos devices to a multi-room system.
  • Unlike a Bluetooth connection, audio content is transmitted uncompressed via the WLAN connection, which allows for higher quality.

Bluetooth speakers and their advantages

The big disadvantage to Sonos speakers is the lack of mobility, as you are dependent on a connection to a WLAN network. Bluetooth speakers, on the other hand, are the ideal companion if you want to listen to music in the garden or while traveling, for example. Some models are even outdoor-ready and offer a powerbank function that lets you charge your devices on the go.
