Switching Windows folders via CMD - how to navigate

Many Windows functions and settings can also be easily accessed via the console window. For some of these commands, you need to be in an appropriate folder. For this purpose, it is important that you know how to change the Windows folder via CMD.

How to change Windows folder by CMD

CMD stands for "command", which means "command" in German. Commands are entered into the console to quickly start certain function by command. In principle, you could control Windows completely via the command prompt. With the "cd command" you can change into another Windows folder.

1. In the line, behind which you enter the command, it says, at which place of the file system you are at the moment. For example, "C:\Users\<your account name>>".
2. Enter "dir" to list the contents of the folder you are currently in.
3. If you want to change the directory, enter "cd" for "change directory" and then the folder name. So, for example, "cd Desktop".
4. It is also enough if you enter "Des" and then press the Tab key. The folder name is then automatically completed.
5. Press Enter, the directory changes to "C:\Users\<Your account name>\Desktop>" and you are with the console in the directory Desktop.
6. Wollen Sie in den übergeordneten Ordern zurück, geben Sie „cd ..“ ein.
7. Wollen Sie die Partition wechseln, geben Sie einfach nur den Partitionsbuchstaben mit einem Doppelpunkt ein, also beispielsweise „D:“.
